Chapter 1:
Shakespeare’s Words of Wisdom to the Young
Standing at the edge of the soaked and dark driveway, he looked up at the house in front of him. Its windows softly lit, warm and inviting through the cold rain. In his clenched hand was a waterlogged piece of paper, it’s ink most likely washed away and staining his hand. It was that same paper that brought him here in the first place, it’s idea not sounding at all stupid at the time.
But as he looked through the steady rain, he wondered if it was really worth it.
"Of course it’s worth it..." the voice in the back of his mind whispered all the way here. Slowly and very nervously, he put one heavy foot in front of the other, further soaking his shoes and pants in the puddles. Though it seemed he had been moving like molasses, he soon found himself staring at the door, his miserable expression enhanced by the porch light.
As he reached for the doorbell with his shaking hand, there was only one thing he could think to keep his composure.
To right all his wrongs he had done, to dry the tears he caused...
The doorbell rang clearly and his heartbeat was clear in his ears.
To make his point clear to that one person, he had to tell them face to face...
The door opened and he looked up at the eyes he knew so well. With that one kind smile, he knew he could definitely say what he needed to...
Or... he hoped so.
**********
"Suge... Ohno-kun did a great job on the backdrop!"
"He painted the jar a little lopsided... and since when was the sky green?"
"He did better than you could! Why are you so grumpy today? It’s the first play of the year, can’t you give them at least some support?"
Nino sunk down in his seat and crossed his arms in a pout after being scolded by Sho. Aiba, who was sitting next to Sho, leaned over slightly.
"Ne, Sho-chan? Is he still angry about... you know?" Aiba whispered in his ear. Sho glanced at the sulking boy to his left and nodded.
"Let’s talk after the show, okay?" Sho whispered as the lights dimmed overhead and stage lights illuminated the opening scene and further beautifying Ohno’s art work of an old market place in Verona, Italy.
"Who picked this play anyway? Romeo and Juliet... it’s so typical for a high school drama..." Nino muttered under his breath as the actors took their places, talking amongst themselves and buying different items. Sho nudged Nino in the ribs swiftly as a warning to keep comments to himself.
"Oh, look! They’re fighting!" Aiba whispered excitedly, tugging on Sho’s arm. Nino lolled his head to the side, watching the amateur fight scene between the Capulets and the Montagues play out for several minutes, all the while saying things Nino hardly understood.
"Did they really talk like this?" Nino dully asked Sho, who glared at him and shushed him harshly. Then, quite suddenly, loud giggles and muffled squeaks of excitement rippled through the female half of the audience.
Matsujun, the rising star in the school’s Drama Club and the heartthrob of more than half
the female student (and teacher) body, had made his appearance as Romeo.
Nino stifled a laugh into Sho’s shoulder as Jun hammed it up on stage. Watching Jun perform these plays always got the best of Nino, who couldn’t contain his growing taunts and teases.
"He memorized all that?" Aiba whispered in amazement, his wide eyes following Jun across the stage as he poured out his heart to Benvolio about a girl named Rosaline.
"When’s Ohno coming?" Nino asked Sho. Clenching his fists on the armrest, Sho sighed loudly.
"Mercutio doesn’t appear until scene four." he hissed loudly, making a couple girls in front of them turn around with death glares. An embarrassed Sho mumbled an apology and turned his attention back to the play.
Nino tried his hardest to pay attention to his friend’s acting, but ended up staring at the detail of Ohno’s paint job instead. It had only been a few months after Nino had confessed to Ohno and got painfully rejected. But even though Sho and Jun both told him to give it up, Nino had made up his mind to pursue Ohno until the end.
After all...
Nino looked up and finally saw Ohno, illuminated brilliantly under the soft stage lights and dressed in old garb. A warm feeling came over Nino as he watched the object of his affection act his part beautifully in Matsujun’s play. Nino tilted his head slightly to the side and smiled...
After all... as Mercutio had told Romeo...
"You are a lover; borrow Cupid's wings, and soar with them above a common bound."
Perhaps... there really was a meaning to this play...
.
A/N: Don't worry, the whole story isn't about this play xD
And the other chapters will be longer~
Hope you enjoyed!
