Our washer unit has been leaking for a while and, frustrated that the landlord was dragging his feet, we called in a handyman ourselves to take a look at it.
It turns out it's not the washer but a pipe backing up, and horrifyingly, there's a lot of mold back there behind the unit. Now that it's been disturbed (and probably now because I'm aware of it) I can smell it all through the kitchen and attached living room and it's freaking me out. Is there anything I can do to minimize how much we're breathing in before the landlord handles it? We've left a message telling him he's got 24 hours to arrange for a plumber or we'll do it ourselves and deduct it from rent, but in the meantime I'm incredibly miserable about it.
Note that we can't get behind the washer because it's a stacked unit set in a little alcove. I was thinking bowls of baking soda to absorb some of the lingering moisture?
I should add that we're moving out as soon as we find a new place because this isn't the only structural issue with this apartment. This workaround will probably be for a month, two at most.
