I inherited an old pie safe that has been the most awesome place to store cereal, dry goods, baking supplies, etc... It's on legs so it would be away from the pets. You could probably find one at a flea market for almost nothing.

Mine looks a lot like this but it's got taller legs so my baby can't get into it (he's 2 and knows that's where I keep the yogurt-covered raisins. *g*)

I was thinking of something similar - today I saw a guy hauling a plastic cabinet storage unit that looks like your pie safe but is used usually in a garage. Yours looks nicer, and will probably last longer and be more versatile, but mine might be cheaper! :)

To the OP, you might be able to find one at a garage sale or I think they have them at Walmart for less than $100.

Just be careful getting them at Wal Mart, because they are often made from particle board, which is not very strong. Would be fine for holding just boxed food and cereal, but not so much for heavier things like small appliances, canned goods, etc.

The one I was thinking of is plastic. I think I know what you are talking about, but this one is a little more sturdy:

I have a Toronto apartment with a 8' x 10' kitchen. Both my roommate and I are cooks with gear and we have separate food cupboards; needless to say, our cupboards are full. We keep the dining room stuff (table cloths, extra wine glasses, vases, fancy serving dishes, napkins) in one drawer of a lateeral drawer filing cabinet in my office area in the living room. We have two full bottom cabinets + a full under sink unit (full of cleaning supplies and laundry detergent), 4 drawers, one full height cupboard above the stove (it's a 1950s era apartment), one narrow full height cupboard, and five "high" cupboards". There is also an open shelf unit above a bar-height table cum counter ( ... )

Possible storage areas; Old blanket chests, old foot lockers (these lock; the older style are metal), chests, vintage luggage.... get creative!

I second the hanging pot rack. It freed up SOOOO much space in my non-kitchen.

we have an ikea thing to hold our dishes too - except that it holds all of the dishes. it's black metal with glass shelves (i'm trying to find it online) and maybe a square foot. there's a shelf where we have a stack of plates, one for the cups, etc. that way our shelves are open for food!

it's pretty awesome because it takes up not-too-much space, but it stores things well. i just wish i could find it for you online! they had it in-store, but i remember it being in a weird place. and of course it's not in the bookshelves section. bleh. at any rate? shelf = good. also, big boxes of things can go in the closet (/pantry), if you have room there. which i see that you don't. try maybe plastic tubs to keep it out of pet-reach while still being on pet level?

good luck!

this worked great for me too - i used to put all of my dry stuff (canned goods, rice, etc.) on it when i lived in an apartment with the world's smallest kitchen (a tiny patch of countertop that was big enough for a dish drainer, and two overhead cabinets and two under sink cabinets for storage - grr!)

it was a foldable one that didn't take up much space, and it looked nice. i got it at target, i believe. :)

How many of those appliances do you actually use, or reasonably expect you will use often enough to justify owning them? The same goes with cookware. Do you have duplicates of anything? Is there any of it you almost never use ( ... )
