detail iv Yukwon supposes that drunk is a good state as any to be in when this happens.
Three weeks ago, Jiho and Kyung arrived windswept wearing a matching pair of shitty grins on Yukwon and Minhyuk’s doorstep-for-the-month, requesting that Minhyuk and Yukwon take up a con with another pair of thieves because Jiho and Kyung were already previously occupied with another con but they really owe this pair of thieves the help needed with their con, and Yukwon and Minhyuk will fill their shoes in with flying colors. They then proceeded to leave without anymore words (pasting an obnoxious sticky note onto Minhyuk’s forehead with the address), and that was that.
Three weeks later, Yukwon finds himself completely enamored by the magic that’s being involved in a con run by Bang Yongguk and Kim Himchan. While Yongguk strikes Yukwon as someone that’s loved by everyone regardless, Himchan hits something within Yukwon that Yukwon can’t articulate particularly well in words and the sheer admiration that Yukwon has whenever Himchan so much as breathes is something that’s sent Minhyuk over the edge with helpless laughter. (“Idol worship, Kwon-ah,” Minhyuk grins.)
The con is finished now-went off without a hitch, as smooth as butter, and yet absurdly fun. Yongguk is conked out across one of the couches in the double suite and Minhyuk (because he lost the game of rock-paper-scissors) is out getting the transaction delivered to Jaehyo in time. Himchan and Yukwon are sprawled on the carpet with the entire contents of the mini-bar spread out between the two of them, drinking to a life of crime, dumbshit marks, money money money, the new spring collection of suits coming out, and where to hit with their next jobs.
Then Himchan mentions his partner before Yongguk.
Then Yukwon mentions his situation before Minhyuk.
Then their eyes meet and the dots connect.
And Yukwon doesn’t quite know what to feel. He doesn’t quite know what to make of the fact that Dongsun used to be a thief (used to be one of them-used to do the same things Yukwon does-used to revel in the same law-breaking high as Yukwon does-used to be in love, used to be loved, used to have been human even). He’s mostly just numb and he thanks the alcohol (thanks that Yongguk is asleep, thanks that Minhyuk isn’t here, thanks that it’s just him and Himchan and-)
“He’s an arms dealer now?” Himchan asks quietly.
“In the early days,” Yukwon stares into his drink. “Now-mostly just land.”
Himchan’s jaw works, and even in the dimness, Yukwon can see the older thief swallow thickly. There’s another long pause (Yukwon pours himself another glass, filled to the brim because he needs it-he really needs it) before Himchan finally glances up and looks at Yukwon for a second time since the revelation.
The other man is smiling.
It’s strained and apologetic and it looks like it tears Himchan up from the inside out just to force his mouth into the shape. “You hate me now.”
Yukwon licks his lips, gripping his glass with both hands because no.
He doesn’t.
(he isn’t even sure what line of logic Himchan followed to come to that conclusion because Yukwon can’t hate Himchan-he’s just given a part of his heart away to Himchan because the way Himchan switches from role to role in the span of seconds, the way Himchan absorbs details like a sponge, the way Himchan pieces together information, the way Himchan filters out everything irrelevant and retains only the richest details to make the plan flow as seamlessly as possible-everything he’s taught Yukwon in just three weeks)
Yukwon reaches out with his foot and nudges Himchan’s shin. Himchan’s eyes are dark pools in the low lighting. “Hyung,” Yukwon says softly, “I don’t.”
Yukwon has a hyung. Yukwon has Yushin, and Yushin is a good hyung-a hyung that would and has given the world to Yukwon. Yushin taught Yukwon how to be a good man, how to be an honest man even when Yukwon’s very career depends on lies and deceptions. But Yushin can never teach Yukwon the way one brother teaches a trade-teaches a skill they want to share-with his younger brother. It’s something missing that Yukwon’s always wondered about-what it’d be like to be normal enough to be able to really learn things from your older brother.
Himchan fills in those spaces (so that Yukwon doesn’t have to be normal to know what it feels like).
“When you left,” Himchan begins quietly, and Yukwon’s breath catches.
But the older man looks up and there’s a relieved grin on his face. “Did you kick his ass?” Himchan finishes with raised eyebrows and Yukwon stifles his laughter against his arm (because he loves Yongguk too, he does, but this is just him and Himchan-Yongguk can wake up when Minhyuk gets here-but for now-)
“Didn’t get to,” Yukwon whispers with a smile.
Himchan leans in and punches Yukwon’s arm lightly, eyes bright and dancing as they curl into crescents. “Next time, then, Kwon-ah,” he says, “let’s get him together.”
