sleeper6 Chapter 12
Reid rolled his eyes at Katie’s enthusiasm as they walked into the club.
“This is great, Reid!” she yelled over the loud music, slightly swaying to it.
“Yes, nothing more fun than a room full of sweaty people yelling at each other,” Reid replied sarcastically.
Katie nudged him in the ribs. “Quit whining, you big baby. I have to go to the bathroom; can you get us something to drink?”
Reid shrugged his shoulders. “Fine.” He sure as hell could use a drink.
Reid made his way to the bar when he froze on the spot. There at the bar was Luke sitting and laughing with a very good-looking guy, who had his hand on Luke’s shoulder.
What the hell is Luke doing here? More importantly, why is that guy’s hand on Luke? Reid thought, feeling anger boiling up inside him.
At that moment Luke turned around on his stool to look out at the dance floor. His brown eyes found a pair of really familiar blue ones. Reid. Luke’s eyes grew wide in surprise.
When Reid saw the recognition in Luke’s face, he turned around quickly. He needed to get out of there.
On his way out he ran into Katie. “I’m out of here. I’ll take a cab; you stay here,” he said, not waiting for an answer. He didn’t want to deal with Katie and her questions right now. He was outside calling for a cab when he felt a hand on his shoulder. He knew who it was without turning around.
“Why are you leaving, Reid?”
Reid turned around, anger and hurt in his eyes. “Is that why you kicked me out?” he barked.
“What do you mean?” Luke asked, confused.
“Don’t play dumb, it doesn’t suit you.”
Suddenly it dawned on Luke. Reid didn’t remember Will. They met after he and Reid were dating for a couple of months. “Reid, it’s not what you think.”
“Save it, Mr. Snyder. I should have known our story wasn’t as great as everybody wants me to believe.”
At that moment the cab pulled up, and before Luke could say another word, Reid got inside and the cab drove away. Will and Katie came out of the club a few seconds after and walked over to Luke.
“What happened?” Katie asked.
Luke turned around with a small smile on his face. “Reid thought Will and I were hooking up.”
“And you think that’s funny?” Will asked, confused and not understanding the reason for the smile on his friend’s face.
“Well, I know him. He was jealous.”
“And you’re enjoying the fact that your husband feels like shit right now?” Katie asked, feeling a little irritated by Luke’s reaction to the situation.
Luke’s face got serious. “No, I hate that he feels like that, but his reaction tells me that he still cares even though I kicked him out and practically told him to leave me alone.”
Katie’s voice softened a little. “Do you have any idea how much it hurt Reid that you asked him to leave?”
Luke looked surprised. “Hurt? How do you mean?”
Katie sighed. “He didn’t want to leave, Luke, but he did that for you. Since he’s been with us, he locks himself up in his room, and he’s even grumpier than he normally is.”
Slowly, Luke began to realize that he wasn’t the only one who was miserable. He’d thought that Reid didn’t want him anymore but now, it seemed that Reid did. “Shit, I have to find him and explain this. I have to tell him I’m sorry.”
“Here is my house key. Get over there. Will can ride with me,” Katie said.
Luke gave here a grateful smile as he took the key and hurried to his car. He needed to set things right with Reid.
When Luke entered Katie’s place, he went straight to the guestroom. He hesitated for a second before knocking on the door. When there was no answer, he tried the doorknob and was surprised that the door wasn’t locked. He slowly pushed it open and walked into the room.
“Reid, are you here?” Luke called out, but there was no reply. Reid wasn’t there.
He ran downstairs when he heard the door open but slowed down when he saw it was only Katie and Will.
“He’s not here,” Luke said. He was becoming anxious and worried.
“I’ll call him,” Katie said, her phone already on her ear. “It’s going straight to voicemail. Reid, it’s Katie, can you please call me? I’m a little worried so please just let me know you’re okay.”
“He’s at the hospital,” Luke suddenly said.
“How do you know that?” Will asked, startled by the certainty in his friend’s voice.
“It’s the only place beside our home where he feels safe and secure.” Luke knew for sure he would find Reid at the hospital. “I’ll let you guys know when I find him.” He rushed out the door.
Luke drove to the hospital as fast as he could. He needed to get to Reid. He wasn’t sure what he was going to say, but he needed to be with him. He knew the right words would come to him when he found Reid.
Luke parked his car and jumped out of it. There were two places where Reid could be-his office or the roof. When Reid had a difficult day at work, he always went to the roof to clear his head before he got home. So that’s where Luke went first, and sure enough, he’d been right when he opened the door. There, standing with his back to him, was Reid. Luke quickly texted Katie.
Found him, see you guys later. L.
Luke stepped onto the roof and carefully closed the door behind him.
“Reid?” Luke softly said.
“Go away, Mr. Snyder.” Reid’s voice was harsh.
Luke flinched. There was that cold tone again, but Luke couldn’t give up now. He knew Reid well enough; he knew that Reid was putting his walls up again.
“Please, Reid, just hear me out,” Luke pleaded.
“Don’t you have a date waiting for you? Please don’t keep him waiting on my account.” Reid still had his back to Luke.
“Will is a friend, a good straight friend with a wife and kid. Please look at me, Reid.”
Reid didn’t respond, but Luke noticed that Reid’s shoulders started to relax a little, so he decided to go on.
“I could never be with somebody else, Reid. I love you. You must know that by now.”
There was still no reaction from Reid so Luke continued.
“I’m really sorry I made you leave our house. I regretted it the moment you closed the door.”
Luke was startled when Reid suddenly turned around and Luke noticed how tired he looked.
“If that’s so, then why didn’t you call me?”'
“Because I’m an idiot, a scared idiot,” Luke said, looking down, not wanting to look Reid in the eye yet.
“What were you scared of, Luke? I thought I made it clear to you that I didn’t want to leave, that I was willing to give it-us-a try even if I don’t get my memory back.”
“I know, but after we-uh-we had-“
“Had sex,” Reid filled in.
“Yes, that. All of my old insecurities kicked in again. We just had, uh, sex, and all I could think about was that you didn’t fall in love with me again, that you wouldn’t and I couldn’t handle it.” Luke finally looked up. “I’m sorry, Reid, I know I should have talked to you about it, but the disappointment that you didn’t remember anything and my insecurity-it was too much for me at the time.”
“You should have told me.” Reid’s eyes were softer now, but he was still hesitant. Luke really hurt him by kicking him out. “And what do you want now, Luke? How do you feel now?”
“I’m still scared as hell,” Luke said. He took a big breath and locked his gaze with Reid. “But I really want to fight for us, if you want that too.”
“And what will you do the next time you can’t handle something?”
“I will talk to you the next time I freak out, I promise. Please, Reid, come home.” Luke took a step towards Reid.
Reid hesitated. Was he ready to do this again? Was he really ready to open himself up again?
Luke knew the look on Reid’s face, and he immediately took a step back, his eyes falling back to the floor. He was too late. He’d blown his chance.
“It’s okay, Reid, I get it.”
Reid was confused, but before he could say anything, Luke turned around and walked away.
“Damn,” Reid cursed, “what now?”
He turned around to face the skyline of Oakdale as thoughts kept swirling in his head. Could he see himself spending his life with Luke? Could he see himself living a life without Luke?
“Shit,” he muttered before he started to run in the same direction as Luke.
When Reid arrived in the parking lot, he was just in time to see Luke driving away. Reid picked up his phone and dialed.
“Katie, can you pick me up at the hospital?”
“What happened? Where’s Luke?”
“Can you please pick me up? I’ll explain later.”
“Sure, I’ll be there in a few minutes.”
Ten minutes later, Reid was greeted by a very concerned Will and Katie as he hopped into the car.
“What happened?” Katie asked.
“I’ll tell you later, but we have to find Luke first.”
“What?” Katie asked, her eyes wide. “Now Luke is lost?”
“Where could he be?” Reid asked before it suddenly hit him. “Drive to the farm.”
Katie nodded her head and drove as fast as she could.
When they pulled up to the farm and saw Luke’s car, Reid let out a breath of relief. He started to get out of the car when he felt a hand on his shoulder. He turned around and looked into the kind eyes of Luke’s friend. He couldn’t remember his name.
“Your falling in love with him again, aren’t you?” Will asked, stating it more as a declaration than a question.
Reid looked down. Was he falling in love with Luke? Was that what he’d been feeling, what he was feeling? He looked up again. “Yes.”
Will gave him a warm smile and Katie gasped next to him.
“Tell him that. He is really insecure when it comes to this kind of stuff,” Will said. He took a deep breath. “I guess we have a certain old boyfriend to thank for that. The last three years with you changed Luke so much. He is much stronger and confident now. I guess we have you to thank for that.” Will grinned before he became serious again. “This whole amnesia stuff really threw him off, and all those old insecurities came back in full force.”
Reid nodded his head. “I know. Thank you . . .” He looked at Luke’s friend with a half-smile. Shit, why couldn’t he remember his name?
“Will, my name is Will,” Will said as he grinned.
Reid nodded his head again. “Thank you, Will.” Reid stepped out of the car and made a beeline to the barn. His heart sank when he didn’t find Luke there because the thought of going into the farmhouse and facing all the people in there made him shiver.
“He’s by the pond.”
Reid turned around and saw Holden. “Thank you.”
Holden nodded his head. When he’d seen Luke a few minutes ago, he looked so sad. He was glad to find Reid looking for him.
Not saying anything else, Reid made it over to the pond where he saw Luke sitting in the grass, hugging his legs to his chest and staring out at the water in front of him.
“If you want to fight for us, you need to stop running away or kicking me out, Mr. Snyder.”
Luke sprang to his feet and turned around so fast that it would’ve been quite comical in any other situation. “Reid,” he breathed out.
Reid bit back a snarky comment when he saw the uncertainty-and love-in Luke’s eyes. So he did the only thing he could think of to comfort Luke. He stepped closer and pulled him into a hug. As soon as Reid felt Luke’s arms around his waist and his warm breath against his neck, he felt himself relax for the first time since Luke kicked him out.
Yes, Will was right; he was falling for this blond brat, and he was falling hard. And to his surprise, he didn’t mind at all. He then remembered what Will told him in the car. Reid pulled back a little and saw Will was right. Insecurity was written all over Luke’s face. Reid’s hand trembled when he brought it up to Luke’s cheek. He released a shaky breath.
“I’m falling in love with you, Luke,” Reid whispered.
Luke gasped, his eyes growing the size of saucers. “What did you say?” he stuttered. He must have heard wrong. Reid couldn’t be in love with him, could he?
Reid saw Luke’s emotions all over his face, as well as the doubt of what Reid had just said.
“You heard it right, Luke. I’m falling in love with you again.”
