sleeper6 Chapter 11
As soon as Reid left their house, Luke knew he too needed to get out of there. He couldn’t stay in the house where he and Reid just had sex. Luke grabbed his keys and jacket and left.
After driving around for hours, it started to darken outside. He found himself in the driveway of the Snyder farm. Luke got out of his car and walked towards the barn.
“Hey, boy,” Luke whispered to his horse, Thunder, gently rubbing his nose. “I think I just made one of the biggest mistakes of my life, and I have no idea how to fix it.”
Thunder whined softly like he wanted to comfort Luke, pressing his soft nose in Luke’s neck. Luke slid down on a bay of hay, pulling his legs against his chest, and he just sat there looking at nothing, wondering what the hell he should do now.
After Katie and Reid entered Katie and Chris’s house, Reid put down his suitcase and sat on the couch, rubbing a hand over his face. Katie walked to the kitchen and came back with two bottles of water. She sat down next to Reid and handed him a bottle.
“Now tell me everything.”
“Katie, I told you, I don’t know.” Reid sighed in frustration.
“'Well, than just tell me how your day went-starting at the very beginning-and maybe we can figure it out.”
Reid really didn’t want to talk, but maybe Katie could figure out what the hell was happening. So he started to tell her everything about that day, from the moment they woke up to the events at the pond later that morning to Luke telling him about his drinking and kidney to their kiss to how Luke fell apart soon after that.
“Oh my god, you guys kissed!” Katie exclaimed, bouncing up and down on the couch.
Reid glared at her. “And yet I’m here instead of at home with Luke.”
“Ah, yeah, I see your point. So what did you do when Luke broke down?”
Reid didn’t want to share all those intimate moments with someone else, but maybe Katie could make some sense out of all this. That’s why he’d told her as much as he had up to that point.
“I hugged him,” he murmured.
Katie didn’t even look surprised. God, I really must have gone soft over the years, Reid thought.
“Okay, was there more?” Katie still couldn’t make sense of the whole situation.
“We had sex.” It came out so soft that Katie would have missed it if she wasn’t paying much attention.
“You had sex!!!” Katie yelled. “Reid how could you do that? I told you that you shouldn’t do anything to get Luke’s hopes up.”
“It wasn’t like that, Katie,” Reid said, getting frustrated. Why would anybody assume that this was his fault? “I read an article the other day about people with amnesia who recovered. Two of them got their memories back while they had sex,” Reid explained.
“Oh Reid, don’t you understand why Luke is so upset? It was research for you, some kind of trial, but for Luke, I know it was so much more than just sex.”
“He wanted it, Katie. I told him we didn’t have to do it, but I just wanted to be honest with him after everything he told me.” Reid let out a deep breath.
“Of course he wanted it. Don’t you understand by now that he’s willing to do everything for you? For him it is a big deal to have sex, but, like I said, for you it was just-”
“What is it with the two of you?” Reid interrupted, anger rising in his voice. “Don’t you listen to anything I say? God, Katie, I told him I wanted to stay with him, that I feel at ease when I’m around him.” Reid took a deep breath. “For God’s sake, I even told him I care about him a lot, and I have never told anyone that as far I can remember. Don’t you guys understand that I’m not the same Reid that I was before the accident? I’m me, the Reid from three years ago and-and I’m doing all these things that I-that I’ve never done before.”
“You should tell Luke this.” Katie realized what Reid was saying. She knew Reid was right. The guy in front of her wasn’t the Reid she and Luke knew, the one who opened up to people. This Reid hadn’t learned how to love fiercely . . . not yet.
“No, Luke kicked me out. If he wants to talk to me, he knows where to find me.” Reid stood. “Now will you show me my room? I’m exhausted.”
Katie knew by the look on Reid’s face there was no room for arguing, so she walked him to his room and said goodnight to each other.
Luke woke up the next morning with someone shaking his shoulder. When he opened his eyes, he looked straight into the concerned eyes of his father.
“Luke, are you okay? What are you doing here this early?”
Luke looked around and noticed he was still in the barn. He slowly stood up. “I came here last night. I guess I fell asleep,” he said while rubbing his eyes.
“You should call Reid. He must be worried sick by now.” He knew how protective Reid was when it came to his son.
Luke looked down. “Reid is staying with Katie for a while,” he said in a shaky voice.
“Oh, and why is that if you don’t mind telling me?” Holden was confused. When he last saw Luke and Reid by the pond the other day, he assumed things were going right for them.
Luke looked up. “I thought it would be good to be apart for a while.”
Holden saw the sadness in his son’s eyes; it broke his heart.
“Do you still think that now?” Holden asked, putting one hand on his son’s shoulder.
“I don’t know dad,” Luke choked out. “How did everything get so messed up? We had such a great live together, and now everything is so, so uncertain.” Tears were falling down his cheeks.
Holden pulled him into a big hug. “It’s okay, son, let it all out.”
Holden pulled back when he felt Luke calm down a little, but he still kept his hands on Luke’s shoulders.
“Try to have some faith in the love the two of you had for each other. Reid fell in love with you before, and the two of you were so good together. Your love was so strong. Being together now, you can start building that again. It might be slow, but it can happen a second time. I would say the odds are pretty good he will fall in love with you all over again, and then you’ll have that wonderful life the two of you had.” He squeezed his son’s shoulder before letting go.
Luke gave his dad a small smile. “Thanks, Dad.”
“You’re welcome, son. And know that if you want to talk or just hang out, I’m always a phone call away.”
Luke nodded and gave his father another quick hug before walking to his car. He needed to go home and think about what he should do now. He knew his dad was right-hell, even Reid told him he could see himself falling love with him a second time.
But there was still that voice in his head, the one he hadn’t heard in the last three years he was with Reid, the voice that told him that Reid wouldn’t-couldn’t-love him now, that Luke had simply gotten lucky the last time and it would never happen again.
And that’s why Luke didn’t get the courage to call Reid. He was afraid, thinking that he’d blown his chance with him. He would simply wait and hope that Reid would either get his memory back or reach out to him.
It was three days later. Luke was sitting on the couch, trying to read a book when the doorbell rang. He opened the door and his eyes lit up in surprise. “Will, what are you doing here?”
In front of him stood one of his best friends with a big smile on his face.
“Hey, Luke, can I come in?”
Luke then noticed the big duffel bag hanging on Will’s shoulder and was worried in an instant. “Yes, of course, come in, but is everything okay?”
“Yes, everything is fine, don’t worry.” Will saw the concern on his friend’s face. He placed his bag in the hall and followed Luke to the living room where they both sat down on the couch.
“Carly is visiting Gwen for a few days so I thought this would be a good opportunity to come to Oakdale and visit some friends and family. “
“That’s great; it’s so good to see you. How are you doing? How are Gwen and little Hallie ?
“We’re fine. Gwen is starting to write music again now that Hallie is going to school. Hallie loves school but she’s growing up way too fast. She’s great, though, happy. We really love it in Carbondale; life is good for us.”
“That’s great, Will. I’m so happy for you.” Luke gave his friend a warm smile.
Will’s face suddenly grew serious. “How are you doing, Luke? I heard about what happened with Reid. That can’t be easy for you.”
“You have no idea. One minute everything is great and the next minute our whole world is upside down, and we’re not sure of anything anymore.” Sadness seeped back into Luke’s eyes again.
Will hated the look on Luke’s face. He didn’t deserve it. Luke was one of the most loving and caring people he knew.
“So I ran into your dad at Java and he told me that Reid is with Katie at the moment.”
Luke nodded his head; he didn’t trust his voice enough to speak. There hadn’t been a moment in the last four days that he didn’t regret telling Reid to leave. But he did tell him and he was living with the consequences now. He hadn’t heard from Reid once in the past three days, and it only confirmed what he already feared: Reid didn’t miss him and was fine with living with Katie.
“So, what would you think if I stayed here for a couple of days, so we can have some fun and talk?”
Luke beamed at him. “I would love that.”
“Good, that’s settled, then.” Will smiled, glad to see his friend’s smile return.
Reid was getting more and more frustrated by the hour, wondering why the hell Luke didn’t call him. He locked himself up in his room most of the time since he’d arrived at Katie’s. Chris brought him some files from the hospital that he could review, not that Reid could concentrate on any of that. The only one who could lure him out of his room was Jacob, pleading with him to come down and play. Reid couldn’t resist the little guy for anything.
He checked his phone for what felt for the hundredth time that day when he heard a knock on his door.
“Reid,” Katie called.
Reid opened the door. “What is it, Katie?” He wasn’t in the mood to talk to her. All she ever did was try to convince him that he should call Luke. But he wasn’t going to do that. Luke kicked him out, and it was up to Luke to make the first move.
“I’m here to tell you to dress up tonight; we are going out to have some fun,” Katie said.
“I'm not going out tonight, Katie. If you want fun, go and find some other victim, like your husband.”
“Okay, well, I’ll just call Luke and invite him over so we could watch a movie or something,” Katie said, walking away.
“You’re not calling Luke, you hear me,” Reid said as he grabbed Katie’s wrist.
“Well, then, you have to make a choice, Doctor. You can go out with me and have some fun or I will call Luke to come over,” Katie said with a smirk on her face.
Reid glared at Katie because he knew she would do it. “Fine, I’ll go,” he said with a huff.
“Great.” Katie clapped her hands together. “Come down in about an hour so we can eat something first. We’re going to a club just outside Oakdale that I’ve wanted to go to for a while now. We’re going to have fun, Reid.”
Reid rolled his eyes and closed the door before she could say another word.
“Great, just fucking great,” he muttered to himself.
Will walked down the stairs after he’d unpacked in the guestroom and freshened up. He found Luke in the kitchen, cooking them dinner.
“Smells great, Luke.”
“Thanks, do you like pasta carbonara?” Luke said, smiling over his shoulder
“I love it. But I was thinking that we should go out tonight and have some fun. I heard about this club just outside Oakdale that sounds great.”
“I don’t know, Will, I don’t really feel like going out.” Luke frowned. He was in no mood to go to a club tonight.
“Oh, come on, Luke, it’ll be good to take your mind off things for a while. Being stuck in here by yourself can’t be easy or fun.”
Luke sighed. “Okay, fine, but just for a little while.”
“Great,” Will said, smiling. “We’re going to have fun, Luke, just like in the old days.”
Luke couldn’t help but smile back as he stared at Will. Maybe this wasn’t such a bad idea after all.
