The History of Oldenburg

Jul 17, 2007 23:21

Since I am leaving in less than two months, I have decided to research Oldenburg, Germany a little bit more:

THE BASICS: Oldenburg, Lower Saxony, Germany is a town situated between Bremen, Germany and Groningen, Netherlands. A train from Bremen to Holland is about an hour and a half long.  With a population of 158,341, Oldenburg is the fourth largest city in Lower Saxony followed by Hanover,Brunswick, and Osnabrück.
HISTORY: The town was first known as Aldenburg when it was first established in 1108. In 1667, Oldenburg was stuck by a plague that eventually led to a fire that destroyed the entire city. During WW2, Oldenburg became part of the new German Land of Lower Saxony.
TRANSPORTATION: Since the railroads are one of Germany's main transportation systems, I will be taking the train to Holland A LOT. Other than trains, bicycles also have a important role in getting around. Luckily, I love bike riding and a know that I will enjoy the exercise.
ECONOMICS: Large agricultural area. Cultivation of livestock, etc.

Most of this is from Wikipedia. I will look for more reliable sources when I have the time.
