See this picture? This is basically what I look like now. It was taken last September, but I have not gained any weight since then, and I've biked all winter, so I think it's pretty accurate.
It's not terrible. What you see before you is an obese woman of 45 who is physically active. She bikes as part of her transportation plan, she has some muscle tone, and her regular diet is pretty okay. Unfortunately, the extra weight is a drag.
I don't like the belly, the flab on my arms, or the thickness of my thighs. I weigh 164 pounds on a five foot one inch frame, and that is too much. My weight is my one real health problem. It cost me points in the fitness survey done by my health insurance, and puts me at greater risk for heart disease, cancer and diabetes.
The weight needs to go.
The last time I decided to lose weight, I was pretty successful at it. That was back in 2009. When I did it, I felt awesome. My energy level went up, my inches went down, and I looked hot. I felt good all over.
I had some intervening stuff that caused me to gain weight including a battle with depression over the prolonged illness of my Mother in Law and other stuff. I have muttered about wanting to lose weight again, but I haven't been motivated enough to keep my hand out of the sweet jar. (This is my one real vice. I can eat sugar at a prodigious rate. It is scary how much sugar I can eat when I am depressed.) I muttered a bit this year about wanting to lose weight again, but I had not really committed to the plan. Yeah, I kept exercising, but did I cut down on sweets? Obviously not. My weight is essentially the same as it was in September.
I've discovered that the only way to go ahead with this is to be as public as possible. I have to commit to my diet plan in front of everyone. I have to weigh myself every week and report back the score. Knowing that the weekly report is coming up every Monday means that I have extra incentive to keep my hands out of the cookie jar.
So I have done the following:
- Committed publicly, both here and on Facebook.
- Put all cookies and other junk food out of my sight in high cupboards. I've also put a "No, you don't!" slip on the chocolate chips in the kitchen.
- Weighed myself, and announced today's weight.
Let's see how this goes, shall we?
Hmm
