Mike, despite a grizzled, battered, and slightly rugged appearance, was proof that you could not judge a book by it's cover. Stereotypes rarely held true, in his opinion, and as he knew he looked like the typical Belfast Irish "hooligan" type, he was far from it. . .

To the point where his old classmates called him misplaced in his old house of Gryffindor ("Ye' shooda' been in HUFFLEPUFF, ya' wee girl!" was a common ohrase even still used by his friends). But that was neither here nor there.

Having six younger siblings hadn't worn him out, and probably wouldn't. He was happiest when he was with family, especially his cousin Maddy. In the kitchen pouring tea into two old cups with shamrocks dancing about them, he looked on out to the living room of his London flat, giving her a surprised, jokingly flabbergasted expression.

"A cake?! Well, you know we can do anything for your birthday! If a cake's what you want, a cake's what you'll get!" Mike cheerfully exclaimed, gesturing her on over to the small, old kitchen, opening various cabinets and cupboards. "You'll have to teach me, I've never in my life baked a cake. But, special occasion calls for it!"

Maddy hurried up and in to the kitchen, ignoring the tea for the moment. She was too excited to start baking. Rummaging through the cupboards she occasionally pulled out ingredients and placed them on the counter.

"I'll teach you how to make a ginger cake!" She informed enthusiastically. It seemed a fitting birthday cake, being a gingernut herself.

She had a small pile of ingredients now, gathered from the cabinets and fridge. Biting her lip she searched for the final ingredient to no avail, "You don't have any stem ginger do you? Or even crystallized ginger?" she asked a bit worried. How could you have a ginger cake without any ginger?

Mike laughed at his younger cousin's exuberance over baking, nodding and going along with it. Cooking, he could do. The Leaky Cauldron had so many contraptions and charms to make everything easy. He, however, was not as skilled, and had not as many charmed cauldrons and ovens in his flat.

"Ginger!" he smiled. "Ah, getting all fancy here, are we? Whatever you want, Maddy," Mike said, reaching into the icebox to gather milk and eggs. If those were even in a cake, he didn't know!

Placing them on the counter, he bit his lower lip in thought. "Well. . .I'll just accio some! The Leaky's sure to have some!" he smiled, grabbing his wand from his pocket and pointing it to his left, down the street towards his place of work. Surely they wouldn't care. . .

"Accio ginger!" he said, instantly being hit in the forehead with a large clump of the spice, appearing almost to look like a miniature mandrake. That was of course followed by a parcel of crystallized ginger, landing just in his wand hand.

"That went better than expected!" he laughed, opening it and putting it by the other ingredients.

Maddy took out four large eggs from the carton before replacing it, along with the untouched milk, back in the ice chest. It was a fine guess though, if she had gone with chocolate he would of been right on the money.

She looked up from the ice chest at just the right moment to witness Mike being struck by a block of ginger, and she couldn't help but giggle. "I'd hate to know what you were expecting then." Maddy joked, but head injuries, however minor, weren't usually better than expected. He was indeed very resourceful though. Maddy tended to forget about magic while she was cooking, maybe just because she was underage and couldn't use it to help out anyways.

"How about I separate the eggs and you chop that up?" She suggested, motioning towards the crystallized ginger, as she pulled out two small bowls from a cupboard for the eggs.

Mike watched his younger cousin in amusement, impressed with her know-how in the kitchen. "Well, I'll have to have you over more often, Maddy, you're a regular chef!" he smiled as she took charge with the ingredients in the ice chest.

He laughed and shrugged, "I didn't really know what to expect, it's not everyday I need ginger." Mike blinked at the ginger root, not really knowing what to do with it, so he simply threw it over on top of the ice chest. Maybe he'd have use for it someday, though it looked rather daunting.

"I know how to do that!" he said triumphantly and took the crystallized ginger to a cutting board on the counter, grabbing a knife from a drawer and chopping it into small, ragged pieces. He was better at cutting things up, as he tended to avoid using magic on any sharp instruments down at The leaky Cauldron, and finished quickly. "Anything else?"
