Why is it that those things made in the past seem better? Is nostalgia a real thing or just messed up memories? distant lives that can never be again or possibly never been in the first place? Maybe it's all about association, I don't know.
I do know, however, that there are those things that have a purly nostalgic value, and expaining their value to a stranger is near impossible, and there are those things that have maintained their value. And then, there are those things who are both.
Seems to me that most of the current shows today is crap. Pure and utter crap. True, we had crap 20 years ago with those stupid "Garbage Gang" collecting cards, but there was also substance. All my young nephew watches is Yo-Gi-Ho or Pokemon or Dragon Ball Z or any number of generic anime trash that was created based on existing merchandise.
What am I rambling about? For my birthday my friends got me
The Goonies. This is definately one of my all-times favorites. It takes me back to the age of 9 or 10, going to the cinema in the kibbtuz near by to watch it, and afterwards watching this movie over and over on the kibbutz's cables. But after watching the movie again with Gorodin (who saw it for the first time) I was utterly persuaded that this movie still has it. That it can still enchant viewers and appeal to both children and adults who can still remember what it is to be a child.
William Goldman defined what an ultimate adventure should have: Fencing, fighting, torture, revenge, giants, monsters, chases, escapes, true
love, miracles. While this is true enough, it is not complete.
The Princess Bride is almost perfect - but still, it takes place in a faraway land with faraway people. The Goonies takes place here and now. It can happen to everyone. It is the ultimate childhood fantasy.
