MUZIKA!

Weird movies are in style now, or so it seems. True, almost nothing can surprise you after seeing GORA, but things sure do come close.

Along with mankind's finest I went to see Terry Gilliam's The Brothers Grimm. The story line is slim, there is a lot of over-acting going on, a few of the characters are exaggerated to the point of absurdity, but the movie pulls it off - and he does so brilliantly!

I must admit I don't really like Terry Gilliam's works (with the exceptions of the Monty Python bits). I truly hated Twelve Monkeys, never cared for The Fisher King and skipped Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, but here Gilliam took an absurd story with a very bad vantage point and made this into a film that works in more than one level. What I found interesting is keeping track of the folklore. There are the painfully obvious ones, like Hansel and Gretel, Little Red Riding Hood, Rapunzel and many more, but I am sure I missed a lot of references and am missing a lot of background. What can be awesome is to have Daniella Gurevitz, a doctor of folklore and myth in the middle ages from the university of Bar Ilan (who lectured in Icon 2004 and in Olamot) give her point of view on this movie.

Anyhow, back to the movie - hmm.. that's more or less all I had to say about it. It's a good way to spend two hours, just don't expect Oscar-worthy performance or easy-to-follow plot. Don't fight it or try to suspend it. Just sit back and let it carry you to a world far far away..
