Why I don’t reply

Jan 11, 2023 11:53

You sent me a message
I didn’t reply
I guess you are probably
Wondering why
But if I try to explain that I don’t
Have the time
It might seem a weak reason
Even a crime.

Doesn’t a text or an IM take
Merely an instant?
Not much of a moment of
Thinking and movement?
The answer is no; no,
Not to me
Because you’re important
My reply must be

Written when I have space
To reframe my mindset
To write the right thing
Never to chance it.

I can’t simply switch to
“Reply mode”
Then back to my day
I know that sounds strange
But I’m just built that way.

Instead of wondering
why it took me so long
Understand that I typed it
Once safe and at home
In a quiet moment
I devoted to you
(The right reply can take hours in fact,
Which is what I do)

You’re important enough
For me to delete and re-type it
Over and again
‘Til its right and you’d like it.
This 2 sentence masterpiece
Years of learning a way
To successfully and
Unambiguously convey

That I’m doing fine thanks
And I care about you
You just might have to wait
For the words to come through.

This poem shows so beautifully the reason why I have exchanged emails forever with my friends in the age when everybody else seemed to switch to some kind of instant messaging

It took me a really really long time to even get used to the whole idea of IM
