It was several hours later, and in her dormitory room, Riza was aware of the posted guards. So Grand hadn't quite bought everything. It took her a while to think of a way to get out.
The guard on the ground was patrolling the side of the building her window faced, but in the last hour she'd watched him, he didn't look up.
Hmm. It was risky, but she also doubted they'd be expecting her to attempt an escape this early in, especially since she was tired and had made a point of hamming that up. Her lights had been off, and she was careful not to make a sound, pretending to be fast asleep
( ... )
Riza's escape through the window did not go unnoticed by a figure who was hiding in one of the trees on the ground around the dorm. As swiftly and quietly as he could, he slid out of the tree and headed for Grand's office on the other side of the grounds to report as Grand had instructed him to do if this happened.
After about six minutes of navigating the grounds and main building he found Grand and gave his report. "So, she decided to try and escape earlier than I thought she would," Grand mused aloud. "No matter, there aren't many ways out of here. Soldier!" the other man snapped to attention, "quickly post a guard around the motor pool, but do not allow yourselves to be seen. I will join you shortly thereafter. We'll see if we can't catch her before she runs off to far." The soldier saluted and ran to do as directed. The guard was posted within five minutes, it wasn't smart to keep Grand waiting.
Riza swore inwardly at the motor pool guards, and tried to will them to wander away so she could get to a vehicle and get out of there before her absence was noticed. Hiding behind a storage shack, she was mostly concealed by the shadows as she stood, and peeked in through the grimy window once again.
Not two seconds after Grand arrived was he informed of Riza's whereabouts by one of the guards posted around the area. Making his way around the building he positioned himself behind her before saying loudly, "Care to inform me as to why we're out having a midnight stroll, Lt.?"
If there was a swear word in existence that matched Riza's feeling at that exact moment, it wasn't part of her vocabulary. Lacking suitable words, she froze, and fully understood the origins of the saying about blood turning to ice as a shiver prickled her neck.
She turned to look at him, trying to will the shadows to swallow her up for an escape route, completely and utterly at a loss what to say now. She didn't dare try to fight him, she would lose, and lose big.
Simply put, she was quite thoroughly fucked, and she knew it.
Grand just stared at her for a moment to let her feelings sink in a little bit. "Care to tell me where Flame really is, Lt.? You have one chance to tell me and I think you know what will happen if you lie to me," his glove transmuting into an arm cannon as he said this.
Riza almost laughed. It wasn't an amused laugh, but a slightly crazy and very scared sort of hysterical explosion inside that threatened to bubble up and escape and she wouldn't be able to stop if it ever started. She was dead, it was just a matter of time, and the truth was so ludicrous, he would never believe her.
I'm sorry, Major.
There was nothing left to lose.
"The truth is, sir, he's not on Amestris any longer. I didn't tell you that before because I wouldn't even have believed me if I'd not seen it with my own eyes."
Grand blinked for a moment, had she snapped? It sounded to irrational to be an effective lie, but how could it be true? It was the only lead he really had on Mustang though. He arched an eyebrow after regaining his composure, "Lead me to this place if it exists Lt. and I might consider keeping you alive. Find out you've lied to me again and I can't guarantee what might happen," he said, his eyes narrowing dangerously once again.
"Come with me, then," he said and led her to his private car. A small portion of the guard outside followed them and surronded the car. Opening the driver's side door for her he motioned for her to get inside. "Get in the car and drive us there, Lt.," he said as he himself got in the backseat as another guard took the passenger side.

But she wasn't currently riddled with bullet holes, which was a plus.
"We'll need a vehicle. It's a bit of a ways, I'm not sure how far, perhaps an hour or two by driving, longer by foot."
Now it was just time to hope the gateway still existed.

Now it was down to hoping she could find the proof.
