30 Days of Supernatural - Day 18
Day 18 - Your favorite SPN romance:
Aside from being insanely busy and stressed this past week, the reason this is late is because I've sort of been trying to decide just what exactly my answer is. In the end I believe I have 2:
1. Sam/Jessica
I pick this one because it seems like the most believable romantic relationship on the show to me (aside from John and Mary, but that's beside the point). Jess was more than just a love interest for the sake of a love interest. We didn't even get a sex scene between her and Sam, and I think that's really what saved the image of their relationship. It made Sam's pain over losing her that much more real, because she felt like more than just an objectified plot device. I mean...she sort of was a plot device, but at least she had a purpose.
There's a reason the whole Jess/revenge storyline worked, even though we didn't actually get to know her, and it's because it wasn't cheapened by anything.
Plus, I actually love Jess. A lot. I'm sad we didn't get to know her. As much as I love shoving Sam in bed with anyone and everyone (and I mean, literally everyone besides Gabriel), Jess is the only other person besides Dean or Cas that I would allow Sam to spend the rest of his life with. Okay and maybe Lucifer...
2. Sam/Dean
Whether they're actually "romantically involved" is irrelevant. You can have a romance without sex, and Sam and Dean's relationship is absolutely nothing less than a romance. This is what I was getting at with the last question. I could have picked Sam and Dean for my favorite friendship, but they're so much more than that. They don't just love each other, they're in love with each other. Their relationship is toxic and twisted, but it works for them. They are each other's world.
So that's it. Sam and Jess are basically my canon OTP, but when it comes down to it, Sam and Dean are...well, they're soul mates.
And this leads into a question sakura_no_mi asked over at the " Ask Me a Question" meme (which is still open, btw, just in case you were wondering).
She said: What is it that finally broke you and got you to ship Sam/Dean?
Because, yes. There was a time when I was not into Wincest. Do you guys remember that? Some of you? Yeah? But honestly...I don't know what the final straw was that got me to ship Sam/Dean. There definitely was a turning point, though. That's for sure. I was so very not into Wincest for the longest time, but then slowly but surely I started wearing down, and now, well...apparently I ship brothers *shrug*.
I think I need to give a lot of credit to sakura_no_mi herself for making me see the light. I don't know if she's just very persuasive, or if her logic is incredibly sound, but she makes a good case.
Plus, fandom has a way of craftily picking away at your defenses. Read enough good fic, and you'll start to believe anything. And I'm not saying I'm just gullible and delusional now, and that's why I ship Sam/Dean, I'm saying there are people out there who know how to shed light on the relationship in such a way that you're forced to look past all the taboo trivialities and see what's really there. And what's there is some questionable codepencency between two men who are simply meant to be together.
And that's my answer. That's why I ship Sam/Dean :)
