Back into Politics (or procrastination has many forms)

The local elections happened yesterday and this morning I found myself refreshing the BBC News home page to see if more councils have declared. At the time of writing 100 of 159 councils had declared results (but Newcastle wasn't one of them :-( ). I also found myself refreshing the podcast list in iTunes every 2 minutes until I got a Today Programme podcast on the local elections.

One thing that I've found renewed my interest in Politics is a blog by various members of the House of Lords. Before I heard about that I listened to the news (and programmes like Today in Parliament and the Week in Westminster) but I had lost my old thirst for information on politics.

After reading that blog I decided to write a letter to a member of the House of Lords regarding my proposals to give blind and partially sighted people the opportunity to vote independently. I got a reply stating that the member would do something to help. I'm happy that somebody has taken up the proposals but I'm a bit annoyed that my local MP (who is paid to represent his constituency) did not even acknowledge what I'd sent him. Of course, it may have something to do with the fact that I sent a real letter to the Lord I wrote to and an e-mail to my local MP but I still feel annoyed with my local MP.

Another thing that came from my listening to Today in Parliament is that one of the opposition MPs is proposing a law that would allow the public to propose laws. There is a BBC video of the speech he made proposing this Right of Initiative. I think that I may use that if it becomes law...

Anyway, I have a lot of cleaning and tidying to do (and part of me suspects that this sudden renewal of my interest in Politics is nothing but an attempt at procrastination).
