While on most points, I think youre right, there werent that many plot elements in the movie. But you know Im a guy and I like fight scenes, so this movie REALLY appealed to me.
But the story its self I thought was about Cloud seeking redemption for not being able to protect Jack or Aeris (hence the emo 'I cant save anyone' stuff). And he finally redeems himself (if to no one else, atleast himself) by succeeding in saving and protecting the children and curing them of the Geostigma.
There was also the other side plot of Kadaj and the other two trying to do exactly what sephiroth did, reunite with Jenova. But as you saw there was a big plot twist and it wasnt Jenova's spirit he fused with, it was Sephiroth's.
On top of those two points I think it gave a refresher into the FF7 story line. Anyone who played the game knows, the story was almost IMPOSSIBLE to follow with the bad translation and this clarified some things.
All in all this movie gets my two thumbs up. Square-Enix fulfilled my quota of expectations personally.
Okay. I can buy the Cloud-seeking-redemption line just fine. That I can deal with. My major deal is that not a single character had any kind of development as the movie went along. Not a single one. Kadaj and his two brothers(what the hell were their names even?) just randomly appeared sucking their thumbs and crying for mom. And I'm sorry, but it all seemed to me to be one big excuse to bring back Sephiroth and let him fight with Cloud...in ANIMATION.
And the "other side of the plot" didn't exist. Kadaj was trying to do this, yes, but wherein lies a story? That's just a goal that's he trying for based on...? You, the viewer, have no idea.
While it did clear up a few things, I wouldn't really say that it was a refresher to the FF7 storyline since the movie relied heavily on the audience's knowledge before watching the movie. It didn't waste any time on going back to the past besides the small opening of cut scenes, but that in itself didn't do anything but sum up, rather loosely, what happened.
I can agree with you about there being no character development in the movie. But I think this movie was actually intended for people who had already played the game and beaten it. Sure there were more characters in the movie, but even in the game there isnt much character development outside of the main characters. The only ones that could have been developed were Kadaj and his two brothers and the little boy (whose name escapes me), Marlene's story was already addressed in the game.
One reason I dont think the story of the Kadaj and his brothers was addressed was because it was in the game aswell. They look to be the clones of Sephiroth like in the game (white hair, black leather and the works) and like in the game their main goal was to reunite with Jenova. Their reasoning for doing this though is sketchy to me because I havent played the game in awhile, I think its just what they were made to do. I do think though in the movie it could of been addressed how they survived because I was under the impression that Sephiroth killed all this clones in the end.
Perhaps refresher was a bad word on my part, I just feel it cleared up a few things, like you said.
Well I agree that it was for people who had already played the game, of course. I didn't mean to actually critisize that element as it's already been sort of understood that that was what it was going to be, but I believe that character development was necessary in order to make the audience care a little bit more about what was going on. As I said before, it's been 2 years since the incident. People and events change. They could have expanded on that a little bit more to allow the audience to really get a feel for who everyone was.
When I say the basis for their goal was unknown, I was wrong. I worded that wrongly, but yeah. They want to reunite with Jenova cause blahblahblah. What I wanted to know was where the hell they came from and what they've been doing for the past two years. A little background information never hurt anyone.
I agree everyone might have changed, but they didnt really give time to show this, which ofcourse is the major flaw you pointed out. The main focus here was cloud and the past that still haunted him. I agree they could have fleshed out the other characters much much more.
Yeah like I said before, I thought all the clones had been killed myself before the game ended. So I completely agree with you that Kadaj and gang's past should have definetly been SOMEWHERE in the movie. Also there should have been something about how Kadaj got his name since in the game they were all numbers.
