After seeing taking back Sunday perform in numerous live videos I saw something magical. First in the Nolan/cooper era I noticed that most of the band members didn’t move that much. Lead guitarist eddie reyes would faithfully reprodce his sounds on stage, while simultaneously shaking his entire upper torso in violent up and down movements. Guitarist and singer john Nolan would do what I like to call the “long island sway”. your lower body stays pretty much still while your upper torso moves back and forth along with the head in a swaying motion while singing. Shaun cooper stayed still except for some head nods. that’s ok, he has some pretty involved bass lines anyways. Drummer mark o connell would do deep headbangs into his kit when the song allowed him. In the mascherino era there was a bit of a change. New bassits matt rubano would run all over the stage grasping his bass wherever he went. He evn injured his knee from jumping up and down to much. Fred mascherino would stay put except for his yells and bows on stage. And he would have the “guitar slash” by bringing it up and down in a slashing movement. So in conclusion the rythym is pretty normal for a fast rock band.however there is also a variable that I did not mention. And that is adam lazzara, the singer.adam is a force to be reckoned with on stage. You never know what he is going to do next.
Wether it be swinging or “throwing” his mic flinging it into the air and pulling it back to his hand.
Or doing the “lazzaraa jive” swaying his head back and fourth and following his mic wherever it goes.
Or even hanging off the lights rafter high above the stage, dangling only with his feet.
From what It seems, adam looks like he would put on an amazing show. Well ask any TBS naysayer and you will get the explanation that he sucks live. I will be the first to adress this topic. Yes it is true that he doesent perform incredible most of the time. Yet here is what I think of it. What if every band in the world made an album then went on tour and performed their song verbatim. No difference between studio and live. Would anyone want to see them? Would anyone bother if they could get the same experience from listening to the cd? When you see a band perform live you don’t know what could happen. The drummer could have fire come out of his ass in the middle of a song. They could have an extended jam in the middle of their hit single. that’s why people go to shows, to see something different from everyday listening. Adam lazarra is a key example of this element. Nobody would want to see TBS If he just stood there singing something. He doesent. He jumps into the crowd. He swings his mic, he screams, he hangs from high rafters. He does more than sing, he performs. You don’t know what he is going to do next he is unpredictable. And that’s what makes a taking back Sunday show exciting. Besides, chances are you’re singing louder and more than he is, you’re stealing his job! It doesent matter if for part of the song he isn’t singing verbatim (he is known to ad lib visciously)
He is putting his heart into entertaining you. And he always puts on a good show. You don’t get a mediocre TBS show, you get a different experience every time. This is why he is one of my favorite frontman to ever live. And BTW he did put an amazing show on at the warped tour
