Initial impressions of the Peacemaker Kurogane anime, having just watched the first episode.

1. What is with all the electric guitars? Seriously, I know they're popular in the more extreme forms of shounen anime, but I just...don't think it works here. I don't know why, Toonami did an English version opening for Rurouni Kenshin forever and a day ago with an opening on the electric guitar and it remains one of my favorites, but it just seems...trying too hard and out of place, here. There must be a way to make badass music without resorting to the electric guitar.

2. Do we get an explanation for the opening scene? Or is it one of those in medias res kind of deals?

3. Tatsunosuke is so cute~! I wanna hug him and pinch his cheeks and he's so adorable and rude and so very shounen. I love him. He makes things interesting, even and especially because he seems to be kind of a moron.

4. Souji is such a girl. I don't know if I should praise Kaze or not on the fact that I was able to pick out his gender quickly enough during our first thread, but I seriously had to double take here. Maybe it was just icon choice - I was able to say "oh, male" during her first tag and just go from there. Or, hell, maybe I'm just inundated by feminine looking guys in my anime. My Gender Studies teacher would probably have a lot to say about that. Still, Souji is girly even for anime. Like, there were points where I was jealous of his hair, and not because of all the hair spray it would take to copy it, which is the reason I'm usually jealous of an anime character's hair.

5. Saizou~! Just...so unreasonably happy that the psycho piggy showed up so quick. And that he plays fetch.

6. Hijikata is a badass. Like, I regularly watch shows with characters that are well known for their badassitude. Hijikata is something special. Also, have I really been mispelling his name all this time? I could have sworn I kept reading it as Hijitaka.

7. The fight scene was actually pretty awesome. I can't even complain about Tatsu coming as close as he did to landing a hit on Souji, because he did what underdogs have to do to triumph over overdogs. He took a ridiculous risk and prayed like hell that it paid off. That's totally fair.

8. Yes, this show is bloody, but...well, it's fake blood. It's really fake blood. Gonzo has nothing on Studio Bones in that regard. Studio Bones did Basilisk, which I never watched, and Sword of the Stranger, which I did watch and loved despite the fact that five characters live to the end, and three of them are animals.

9. I don't know about Souji's voice...it's weird. Like, it is the perfect androgynous voice. High enough for me to think that he's definitely feminine, but low enough for me to doubt that he's actually being voiced by a woman. It kind of bugs me. I couldn't make a judgment call until I saw the credits and realized holy shit, his English voice is actually a guy?! Tatsu's voice actor sounded more masculine. I applaud them both - that takes some doing.
