have any of you been with me to an asian restaurant / grocery store / out in public period? if so, then you know that i invariably get asked what my ethnicity is (as if it's anyone's business). some think chinese, i've gotten thai or some other southeast asian variety before, but mostly i get asked if i'm korean. okay, i can understand how my mixed ethnicity can make me appear to be korean. growing up, i really did believe that koreans were just a mix of chinese and japanese anyway (they're not). but, it always boggles their minds when i tell them that actually, my father is chinese and my mother is japanese. i guess growing up in hawaii where being asian is several generations removed and cultures are mostly integrated and celebrated across ethnicities, it's not a big deal to me. but the incredulity and inevitable "how does that work?" follow-up question never fails to amuse. anyway, some related linkage:
AllLookSame - i have some problems with this quiz, but i do appreciate it for attempting to deconstruct some of the stereotypes around what it means to look like an east asian.
