Quills scratched away as a hall full of students - Ron's first year, to be precise - worked diligently on their History of Magic examinations. In fact, except for the setting, it was almost like being back in Professor Binns' classroom. Okay, well, minus the drone as well.
Ron looked up. Bright summer sunshine streamed into the hall. He wanted to close his eyes and bask in it, but that might not be the best way to spend his hour here. Fortunately, said sunbeam wasn't actually on him - he could see Neville sweating up a storm in front of him. This wasn't the least bit helped by Snape, who was glaring with the faintest smirk over the boy's work.
Ron cast a glance to his left. Amidst all the scrawling there was one very busy scribbler. Hermione scratched away at her paper, busily writing about who-knows-what on her paper and ignoring everyone else's looks of self-frustration. Where the bloody hell did that girl get her brains? On Ron's right Harry caught Ron's eye, and grinned. His paper had a lot of scratched-out bits and smudges. That looked a bit more normal!
Ron looked forward again, and jumped when he saw Snape staring at him. He looked down and rapidly started scribbling nonsense, hoping that he didn't look like he was cheating. Ron wouldn't put it past Snape to accuse him of something, and Ron just couldn't take that hit to his marks.
Half an hour later a bell tolled. There were groans and sighs as Snape announced to put down quills. He walked up and down the rolls, grimacing at each parchment he collected, sometimes with a comment.
Unfortunately, Ron was the victim of one. "And what do you make of this effort, Weasley?" drawled Snape.
"I tried," Ron shrugged helplessly.
"Do or do not, there is no try," Snape grumbled ominously as he walked off.
