here "I'm seventeen and I'm crazy. My uncle says the two always go together. 'When people ask your age,' he said, 'always say seventeen and insane.'" - Ray Bradbury from Fahrenheit 451
From the moment Harry announced he would not be returning to Hogwarts, Ron knew that he would accompany his friend, not just to help in Harry's quest, but also because he knew Hermione would go, and he was desperate to stay by her side.
Ron first really noticed Hermione's blossoming beauty at the Yule Ball during Fourth Year. And by then it seemed too late. She was with the talented, rich, and famous Viktor Krum, and how could Ron compete with all that? What could he possibly offer?
And then, when Hermione's relationship with Krum seemed to fade, Ron became concerned that Harry would win Hermione's heart. Again, Ron's insecurities came to the fore: Harry, like Krum, seemed to Ron to be infinitely more talented, rich, and famous than himself.
When the trio set out on their quest, Ron obsessively watched the interactions between Harry and Hermione and, without any proof whatsoever, decided his best friend and the love of his life must be in love with each other. One night, his irrational jealousy finally got the best of him, and he walked out. No, he stormed out, forgetting for the time being that they would move on and shield themselves, and he wouldn't be able to return.
He was crushed, incensed at his own irrational behavior. He was petrified that he had ruined his relationship with the two most important people in his world. If it hadn't been for the forethought and insight of the late Albus Dumbledore, he might never have seen them again.
But thanks to Dumbledore, and of course thanks to the patronus of Severus Snape, he did find them. He destroyed the locket horcrux and Harry, realizing Ron's fear regarding himself and Hermione, was able to reassure his friend that he had no such intentions towards Hermione.
Ron regained a bit of his sanity that day. And when, during the battle at Hogwarts, he showed concern for the house elves, Hermione's passionate embrace showed him that everything would be alright. He would live past the age of seventeen, and the woman he loved also loved him.
