“Look, Lily,” Snape said, cornering her in a corridor. But she stared at him coolly before abruptly turning on her heels and walking quickly in the other direction. Snape snapped around to fall in step with her. Lily stared at the floor.

“I said I was sorry!” His greasy hair hung against his face, and shook violently as he spoke. His mouth formed into a deep scowl.

“It doesn’t matter anymore, Severus. I’m over it; I’m over you.” Lil said slowly and quietly, trying as hard as she could not to cry. Not in front of everyone, and definitely not over Severus.

The Slytherin boy paled. “You’ve always been there for me. You’ve always been my friend, even though we got sorted into different houses. And I’ve always been there for you, haven’t I?”

“Yeah. And to think I was actually sad about that,” she spat bitterly. “I liked you because you weren’t like them James Potter and his followers.”

“I’m not!” He cried, pale skin and unusual shade of pink. “Lily…”

She turned to face him squarely, looking up at him as he stumbled at her abruptness. Her green eyes blazed as the met Severus’ dark ones. “James disgusts me. His arrogance, the way he treats people like absolute garbage. Like he’s better than everyone else. He’s selfish and mean, and he thinks he owns this place. I always stuck up for you. But he has never hurt me as badly as you just did.”

The words, as Lily wanted them to, sliced deep. Severus looked away as if he couldn’t bear to admit she was right. He squeezed his eyes shut, hoping this whole thing wasn’t real, hoping if he shut them he could make it all go away. Slowly, he opened his eyes. Severus reached out to her, knowing that nothing he could say would make it right.

Lily ran off, clutching her books tightly to her chest, before he could touch her. She knew if he touched her things might get out of control, and Lily couldn’t predict which way that would go. She could see it in her mind, her forgiving him, and her slapping him. The smartest thing to do was to run.

She couldn’t face everyone in Gryffindor tower, not now, not yet, so she headed to the library. Shacked up alone in a carrel half hidden from view, she cut herself loose. Tears flowed, but she wasn’t sobbing. They were quiet tears: tears of betrayal and tears of regret, tears she didn’t want to shed.
