At times, Cedric was glad he had the reputation of being a hopelessly pleasant young gentleman. It was fine, because he knew he was an all-round goody-two-shoes (for which he made no apologies; why should he be ashamed of it?), but it meant people assumed he had time for everybody. Hell, Cedric assumed he did, too... until that teacher came to school.

Professor Gilderoy Lockhart.

Cedric had never met a man who made his skin crawl in such a way. The teacher was smarmy and slimy and his voice made the hairs on the back of Cedric's neck stand on end. H e remembered his first Defence against the Dark Arts lesson in which Professor Lockhart set them a quiz as an excuse of an introductory lesson. Cedric wouldn't have minded the quiz itself, were it not for the pure conceit wrapped up in the answers.

And then, Professor Lockhart flashed the class one of his big, perfect smiles, and Cedric, for the first time in his life, wanted to punch his lights out.

"Am I the only one who finds him really offensive?" Cedric found himself blurting out in the common room one day, as a group of Hufflepuff girls from his year sat in a circle on a rug. "He actually makes my skin crawl."

"Awww, Cedric," teased one of the girls. "I never had you down as the jealous type!"

Cedric spent the rest of the term imagining Witch Weekly's Most Charming Smile Award Winner bleeding from the gums after Cedric had personally knocked two of his teeth out... and it wasn't until Christmas that he decided he would have to talk to his father.

But, being the magnanimous youngster he was, he decided to talk to Lockhart first, to see if he could clear the air, for Cedric didn't like loathing anybody.

After a twenty-minute discussion, Cedric left the office feeling lightheaded and a little bemused. He was sure he had forgotten something, but didn't seem to recall what it was, or whether it had been important.

All he knew was that Professor Lockhart was a marvellous man, and his were the best classes he had ever been to.

Title: The Greatest Wizard.
Rating/Warnings: PG-13 Crack.
Characters/Pairing: Scorpius Malfoy, Albus Potter.
Summary: Scorpius Malfoy is determined to raise his firstborn to be the greatest wizard of his generation.
Word Count: 767
Author's Notes: For Challenge #77 Next Generation. Done to the nth degree as it's the next-gen's next-gen.
Registered purchases?: Both

Every generation has the greatest witch or wizard of its age, Scorpius realised. For his father, it was that Muggle-born mother of Rose Weasley. Generations before, it was the one people still referred to as You-Know-Who. Before him, it was Albus Dumbledore.

For Scorpius, it was Albus Severus Potter. And he hated it.

There was something about his name, for one. It was as though the name Albus carried a certain charm to it, because a lot of the teachers seemed rather respectful to him, and gave him much more attention. Scorpius became angry as it was Albus who beat Scorpius in every class, rather than the other way round. His father was disappointed, yet unsurprised. His grandfather suddenly became a lot less interested. His mother said she'd love him all the same, but he knew she actually detested settling for second-best in anything.

As he grew up, Scorpius watched Albus become a Prefect, a Quidditch Captain, a Head Boy- it was like watching someone casually tick the boxes on a list. One day, Scorpius felt compelled to challenge his rival to a duel.

And Scorpius was determined to make it a fight to the death; he had planned all sorts of ways to make it look like an accident; as a Slytherin, it was second nature.

Scorpius Malfoy versus Albus Potter. It was going to be mortal combat.

The two stood in the courtyard and duelled that evening. A small crowd of spectators watched; Scorpius had spent weeks planning all sorts of grotesquely cruel jinxes to use, many of which took Albus by surprise. Taking down the son of an Auror was going to be surprisingly cathartic, and for once he would make his father proud, and-

Scorpius fell do a lowly Trip Jinx, and was disarmed immediately afterward. He balled his fists and punched the ground as Albus was cheered by the crowd. Knock-out.

"FINISH HIM!" One of the Gryffindor boys screamed through the air.

Albus looked down at the crumpled heap of his adversary, and offered a hand, helping Scorpius to his feet. The Slytherin would never live down that final act of humiliation.

That was ten years ago now, and Scorpius still tried to move on, but it was to no effect. He couldn't shake the resentment at the attention the Potter dynasty (that's what it was, right?) got in the media. He felt bitter, as the Malfoy clan slowly sank into obscurity.

A silver horse galloped through the door, before speaking: 'My waters just broke. Checking myself in to St Mungo's. Hurry.'

Scorpius grabbed a bag and Disapparated to the hospital entrance to be with his wife, Claudia, a pureblood witch from the MacMillan line who attanded Hogwarts the year below him.

"He's here, nurse!" She cried.

"Are you ready?" said the nurse, pulling out her wand and pointing it at Mrs Malfoy's uterus: "Anapneo!"

The baby erupted forth with a plopping sound, she severed the umbilical cord neatly and smiled: "Congratulations. It's a boy."

The Malfoy parents cooed over it quietly for a few moments, admiring the wonder of the new life. Finally, Scorpius spoke:

"We need to give him a name."

"Oh," said Claudia. "I presumed we were going to name him after your late grandfather."

"No, I don't think the name Lucius Malfoy II will be appropriate," Scorpius said grimly. "But I do have a name in mind."

Claudia sat up. "Oh?"

"Yes, it's not enough to hold family honour any more. It is essential to have talent and magical prowess. And above all, one must have a name that represents greatness. I want our son to be the greatest wizard of his generation. It's time a Malfoy reigned again."

And it was true. The namee Albus commanded power and respect. Two great wizards bore than name, and it was imperative that Scorpius' new son bore a name that was ancient and mystical, fearsome and wise, dominant and reassuring, one that would echo in the annals of history for many, many years to come.

And he had one name in mind. He told his wife his choice. She didn't seem to like it at first, but she knew how important this was to him. Soon, she would grow to like it. And Scorpius dedicated to teach his son a few tricks that would give him a massive headstart in the first few weeks of his magical career, even if that would not be for some time.

Eleven years after being born in a hospital, Gandalfus Malfoy boarded the Hogwarts Express wearing grey robes. He would make his father proud.
