Her heart was beating uncomfortably fast and she fixed her eyes on the comforting bulk of Millicent in front of her, dimly outlined in the light from her want. A twig snapped behind her and she jumped, letting out a small sob as she wrenched herself around only to find one of the third-years grinning behind her. Why, oh why did they have to do this horrible thing? As if he read her thoughts, the older student leered at her unpleasantly,
“You remember, firstie, you’re not a real member of Slytherin if you can’t stand the Forbidden Forest Initiation…”
Biting her lip, Daphne turned back around, determined to live up to her house, only to see the figure of Millicent nearly lost from sight. Hurrying forward, she fell flat on her face as her leg caught on something. Crying out in pain, she struggled to her feet and hastily brushed herself down, her hands shaking as she shook a small spider from her arm. Recovered a little, she looked around.
No one. The Forest was bereft of human voices, of laughter and taunting and the encouragement of the older Slytherins. Daphne shifted nervously.
“Hello?” She called out nervously, and then repeated her call a little louder. “Is anyone there?”
No answer.
