She dropped the letter and fell into a chair. Her stomach dropped. What was she to do? Hermione collected her thoughts and moved closer to the fire, she was shivering from excitement. Ron loved her. Did she feel the same? What about Viktor? She’d written him back already. She fell back into the sofa. It was getting quite late. Nobody else was around and the flames weren’t as lively, in fact they were almost dying out.
She moved over to a table and got out some parchment. She didn’t know how to start this. After a couple of minutes of contemplation she dipped her quill in ink and started writing. She stopped occasionally to think of how to put things delicately or to get more ink but when she finished she looked it over, satisfied. Then she got out more parchment and started another letter. This time though she wrote without many interruptions. She seemed to know exactly what to write and how to say it. It was as if she’d been waiting for any excuse to say it. When she was done she got up and put both letters in envelopes and stuffed them in her bag. She’d mail them in the morning, it was late, she needed her sleep and so did the owls. She ran upstairs leaving her bookbag by the table.
The next morning Ron Weasley got up and went downstairs. When he got there he looked for his two best friends but didn’t see either of them. Oh well, he’d wait. They had to eat breakfast together after all. He saw Hermione’s backpack and figured he’d go over and wait by it. When he got there he looked down and was puzzled. On the floor was an envelope addressed to Krum. It must have slipped out of Hermione’s bookbag. He almost put it back when curiousity took over. Why did she have an envelope with his name on it? Didn’t she mail his letter already? He looked around and seemed to decide that it was ok to read it, he had time and nobody was really around. He wanted to know what she ended up saying to him anyways. He opened the letter and began to read.
Dearest Viktor,
I know I already responded to your letter. Everything I said was true, at the time. I had developed feelings for you, of a certain nature. I did feel like we were growing close and that we were quickly moving to more than friends. I did.
However, last night my friend wrote me a letter. I was shocked but I realized that what I felt for you was a mere adoration of a new friend. I want to be close friends, best friends even. I just don’t think it would work between us as a couple. I believe two people need a stronger foundation for a relationship than what we have.
I’m sorry if I’ve hurt you in anyway. I just, well, to be honest, I’ve fallen in love with someone else. My feelings for him have been there for longer than I’ve known you, I just haven’t realized it. Believe me, if I’d have realized I would have told you sooner. I’d have gladly spared you this pain you’re feeling. I’m sorry. I wish I could tell you I felt the same as you felt for me, but I just can’t. I’m in love with my dear friend Ronald Weasley. Please though, please don’t ever stop being my friend, ok?
Yours Truly,
Hermione
Ron felt himself flush. Though this time he wasn’t upset he was elated. She loved him. She’s always had feelings for him. His letter might have won her over. He didn’t know what to say. He stuffed the letter back in the envelope slipping it in her backpack. He didn’t know what to do with himself, he felt like he had a sudden burst of adrenaline. He waited for his friends to join him. When they did Ron couldn’t stop beaming at Hermione. As they walked down to breakfast with their normal chatter about classes and the conditions for quidditch practice later on that day Ron grabbed Hermione’s hand and she laced her fingers with his.
Sorry in advance for any spelling errors, for some unknown reason my spell check wasn't working. :/
