Okay, so maybe Ron Weasley has fantasized about being trapped in a broom cupboard with Hermione Granger. Just once or twice, mind you. Nothing seirous. It isn’t as if his daydreams are dirty or demeaning - they’re just nice, is all. He just likes the idea of being in a confined space with her, pressed up against one another, where no one would ever think to look for them. It wasn’t a big deal.

Yes, the thought of hiding in a broom cupboard with Hermione has certainly crossed his mind. But never does Ron think it would happen like this.

“Would you just get in here?” Hermione hisses, her grip on Ron’s robe sleeve firm. She hauls him into a nearby broom cupboard off the fourth floor corridor and closes the door as quietly as she can manage.

Ron, for his part, tries to stay upright as he stumbles around the small space, his footing disrupted by a bucket and mop taking up most of the floor. It was just like Filch, managing to ruin Ron’s broom cupboard fantasy without even really trying. He manages to steady himself by pressing his back to he cool wood, but when he looks up, Hermione doesn’t exactly seem prepared to hold him down and have her wicked way with him. Much to his dismay. Instead, she has her ear pressed up against the door and is very clearly listening for something out in the corridor. He studies Hermione for a moment with his eyebrows raised, more than a little bewildered.

“What’s with you?” he asks.

“Ronald Weasley, I swear, if you can’t be quiet for two bloody seconds -”

Footsteps clatter by outside the broom cupboard, and Hermione falls silent. Ron leans forward a little, straining his ears to hear whatever Hermione deems to be important enough that they have to hide themselves away in a closet to avoid being detected. It’s two people out in the corridor; Ron is able to gather that much, and at least one of them is a girl. He’s never heard a bloke with a laugh that high-pitched.

“You need to stay quiet,” a low voice murmurs, and Ron wrinkles his nose in disgust as he places it.

“Malfoy,” he mouths to Hermione, his expression a combination of displeasure and boredom.

“I know!” she mouths back, complete with eye roll. She gestures to the door, which Ron takes to mean either Malfoy’s directly on the other side, or Hermione’s developed some sudden affection for solid oak. Given the circumstances, he figures it’s safe to assume the former. He rolls his eyes right back at her, because it doesn’t take a genius to figure out how close by Malfoy is. It’s as if Hermione thinks he’s still walking around in nappies, for Christ’s sake.

“I’m not usually the one who has that problem,” a female voice replies on the other side of the door, and Ron feels as if his knees may give out. He knows that voice, although it’s never sounded like that when it was addressing him. The voice belongs to Ginny. It’s Ginny out there in the hallway, his little sister, and she’s practically purring into Malfoy’s ear. Ron suddenly feels as if he may see his lunch in reverse, and weakly thinks it’s rather lucky there’s a bucket at his feet.

But Hermione’s eyes are on him, wide and steady all at the same time, and Ron is pretty certain that she’s the only girl in the world who could appear both surprised and stern at the same time. She raises a finger to her lips, urging him to stay silent. And so he sags against the wall, head in his hands, and does what she tells him to. Part of him wants to burst out of that broom cupboard right then and there, send that slimey Malfoy git flying, and lock his sister up in the tallest tower until she’s forty-six. But the other part of him still sort of feels like it’s going to be sick, and for the moment, that side’s winning out.

Draco and Ginny exchange a few more words, spoken low, and if that isn’t enough to make Ron press his hands over his ears, the unmistakable sound of a small, female body being pressed against the door certainly does the trick. Ron keeps his eyes closed and his hands over his ears, and spends his time trying to recite everything Slughorn had rattled off about Felix Felicis during class that morning. He’s doing everything he possibly can to drown out whatever else is going on in that hallway, and unfortunately, it isn’t totally working.

Eventually, he feels Hermione’s hands wrap around his wrists and gently lower them from his ears. He opens his eyes slowly and focuses on her uncertain face. It’s over.

“They’ve gone,” Hermione says, and Ron can see her fidget a little, nervously anticipating his reaction. Ron doesn’t want to think about where they’ve gone. Hermione tilts her head a little as she looks up at him. Her hands are still holding his wrists. “Are you okay?”

Ron takes a deep breath, trying to regain his calm. So what if his little sister had been in the hallway with Draco Malfoy? So what if his sister, his baby sister, was out in that hallway, rubbing up against the most vile git Ron has ever met? So what if she’s been fooling around with someone who insults the entire Weasley family every possible chance he gets? So what? That’s none of his business. It’s not like he’s being forced to lock lips with Malfoy. It’s not like he’s the one who’s going to bring disgrace to the family if anyone else finds out. In the grand scheme of things, this has nothing to do with him. It doesn’t.

Ron nods slowly, doing his best to put on a brave face. “I’m fine,” he assures Hermione, one side of his mouth quirking up into a vague smile. And then he takes another deep breath, bends down, and promptly vomits into Filch’s bucket.

end.
