The burrow was an absolute flurry of activity as the wedding guests arrived, and everyone was attempting to help in some way- or, more or less, just get in the way. Molly Weasley was not impressed, and was doing her absolute best not to let loose on everyone.
Charlie watched as she tried to hint to Arthur that he should get everyone moving to the marquee, but his father wasn’t listening; he had run to greet Remus and Tonks, who had just walked into the crowded kitchen.
Remus was assuring Molly they were just dropping of their gift and then they’d head out- but Charlie wasn’t paying any attention to him. He was watching her.
Nymphadora Tonks.
Despite everything that had happened between them… well, he’d never ended up finding the same thing with anyone in Romania. He let everyone think that he was too occupied with dragons to keep a girlfriend. It was true, in part. But that was also because he always measured every single girl he met up to her, and none of them had ever come close.
She looked beautiful today.
She never usually went blonde, but today it suited her; there was a flush in her cheeks that stopped her looking washed out, and her short purple dress clung tightly to the curves of her chest and hips; not to mention showing off her particularly nice legs.
She saw him looking her up and down, and the smile on her face faded a little. It also made her blush and look forcibly look away from him.
He’d felt horrible when he’d had to break things off with her. But they’d both known that if they’d tried to keep a long distance relationship going, one of them would have ended up cheating. And he hadn’t wanted to risk breaking her heart that way, or having that happen to his.
There had been others, after her. Just no one like her.
Maybe it was like they said. Maybe first loves were forever.
The only hitch in any fabulous plan forming in the back of his head was, of course, her husband.
He still didn’t understand why she’d married him, when all he’d done was broken her heart, and then spent a year stomping on it.
In retrospect, he guessed he’d done a little of that too.
“Charlie, don’t just sit there, please! Be a dear and take this out to the table for the guest book…” A frazzled Molly shoved a jar of ink and a handful of quills at him. Sighing, he took them, jumping off the kitchen stool he’d been slumming on since people had started arriving.
She was only just leaving the kitchen. If he caught up now, surely-
A spark of inspiration.
Glancing at the bottle in his hand, he quickly unscrewed the cap as he weaved through the crowd. Now he just needed an excuse…
With the most perfect timing, Hermione’s cat Crookshanks slinked out of the tangle of legs and right into his path.
It was easy after that. He felt bad tripping over the poor creature, but he needed an excuse to talk to her without her husband anywhere near. And surely Remus was the trusting sort and wouldn’t think twice about her ex-boyfriend taking her to clean herself up.
Luckily for him, Remus was definitely the more clear headed of them at the moment. While she over-rid his apologies by yelling, Remus cut her off by agreeing that Charlie ought to take her to clean up, while he could save them seats.
Grudgingly, she allowed herself to be led to the small bathroom.
“ I really am sorry, you know.” Charlie told her again, wiping ink off her shoulder as she scrubbed at the hem of her dress.
“Don’t worry about it. I over-reacted; I’m sorry. I’ve just been really stressed lately.”
“It’s fine, I get it. The Ministry, the Order, and now you’re all newlywed… I can see how that would get hectic.”
She shrugged, moving forward to soak her cloth as he moved to do the same thing, and they were suddenly too close in the small space, and she obviously wasn’t comfortable with that.
Tonks took a step back. “How are we ever going to move on from this relationship if we continue to use the same sink?”
He could tell she was joking.
“I don’t know.” He replied, taking a step forward, so she was back against the wall and had knocked down several bottles of sleekeazy’s hair potion.
He wasn’t joking.
“Charlie…” she looked down, shaking her head.
“What?” he moved even closer. Their noses were almost touching.
She looked up at him from under her blonde curls. “I’m married. So please don’t.”
“You can’t tell me you don’t still have feelings for me. I know you do. You can’t even look at me.”
“I can’t look at you because the want is always there in your eyes, Charlie. And it’s not fair. YOU broke up with me. You can’t be angry at me for moving on.”
“But you still have feel-”
“I don’t know.” She cut across him, looking away. Out the window, where her husband would be standing somewhere, mingling with the other guests.
Gently, he pulled her face back round to his. He could see the confusion and fear in her eyes as he kissed her.
But she only responded for a second before her mouth became hard like stone, and she pushed him back. Her eyes were flickering, and she looked confused.
“I can’t… I can’t do that to him, Charlie. I don’t care what you think. I love him. So… so don’t ever try and kiss me again.”
She stalked past him, wiping a tear from her face while she used her wand to remove the stain. The bathroom door slammed shut and he was left alone. Again.
It seemed he could never get anything right when it came to Nymphadora Tonks. And at times like this she made him too scared to keep trying.
