Remus Lupin never checked his mailbox.
There was never a reason to; it wasn’t like he was ever going to get muggle mail, let alone mail at all that wasn’t from Sirius begging him to come save him from the boredom of Grimauld place. And he usually ignored those anyway.
It was just by chance that he happened to be passing the window when he saw the postman striding past after purposefully shoving something in his letterbox. Frowning, he cautiously opened the door, watching him walk off. Could it be some kind of trap, or a practical joke? Was it going to explode in his face? Knowing Sirius, it very well could.
The only letter he’d ever received in his mailbox before was from the local library, telling him he had three books overdue, and by the time he’d actually found the letter, they would’ve been six months overdue if he hadn’t already returned them.
So he was pleasantly surprised to find a postcard sitting in his mailbox, with a picture of a pack of wolves, and curling font announcing it to have come from some quaint village in the English country side. Confused he turned it over.

Wotcher Remus!
I’d like to say I saw this and thought of you, but really it’s just insanely boring here, and the only letter’s I’ve been getting are from S, and from the sounds of it he is half-insane already. Mad-eye can be pretty poor company a lot of the time, and I need someone sane and NOT paranoid that I will get blasted to oblivion if I step outside the room without taking the proper procedural checks first. Don’t tell him I said it, but he really is mad.
Hopefully your life is slightly more mundane, although I suspect you too will be receiving crazed letters from S. if you see him any time soon, give him a manly hug from me.

How unexpected.
Remus would never have expected her to send him a letter, of all the people that she knew. Not that he minded; in fact, he didn’t mind at all. He liked that she had sent him a postcard very, very much.
He just hoped that if she was replying to Sirius, she hadn’t mentioned she’d written him. If she had, he’d never live it down. The first thing that came to Sirius’ mind when he heard they were writing each other would not be friendship.
It would be rude not to write back quickly. He knew she was in a muggle village, but he was sure he could get away with an owl. Besides, he had no idea how many stamps one letter would need.
Just as he picked up a quill and found a stack of parchment, a familiar, tired looking barn owl flew through the window.
Shit. Shit shit shittity shit.
It was from Sirius. Gingerly, he tore it open.

MOONY. I HEAR YOU’RE GETTING ACTION.
WELL DONE MY FRIEND, WELL DONE.

Groaning, he let his head fall into the desk.
This was not good. At all.
