The sounds of alighting students vibrated through the compartment walls with a low hum that made her skin itch.
She took another deep breath.
The off summer vacation had been everything but relaxing. With the end of the war Hermione had gone back to restore her parents memories - a revelation they hadn't taken well. Try as she might she couldn't take the oppressive sense of distrust and hurt when she was at home and after a while had gone to the Burrow to be with Harry, Ron, and the other Weasleys. It hadn't been much better there and her romance with Ron was short-lived, especially as she had no interest in a long distance relationship so soon after the war, and with the boys off to Auror training and her enrollment in Hogwarts for her missed seventh year, it served their friendship better to mutually end their romance. Hermione had disapproved of their refusal to re-enroll but had understood the compulsion to move on with their lives.
This was how she'd found herself on the Express, alone in the compartment. It hadn't been hard finding an empty compartment, many students hadn't returned, with some parents surely holding their children's enrollment.
Hermione leaned back against her seat, head slightly turned up, her neck cushioned by her hair. She closed her eyes, taking a deep breath forcing her body lax as the Hogwarts Express shook and began to move forward. She couldn't suppress the twitch of her hand towards her wand when the loud horn signaling departure sounded.
