On his way to the Shrieking Shack, Remus drags his fingertips, with their gnawed-down fingernails, against the curves of earth in the tunnel. It's the end of September, that first chill of autumn in the air, and the leaves on the trees in the Forbidden Forest are changing. The dark green gives way to amber, gold, maroon. But the Whomping Willow doesn't change. Always looming alone and gray on the grounds.
That's how Remus feels every time he makes this walk to the shack - gray and alone. In a few days, he'll feel more himself, feel more vibrant, like the color-changing leaves, in his Gryffindor scarf, shouting from the stands at a Quidditch match. Or else surrounded by his friends in the Great Hall, challenging Sirius to the challenge of who can eat more helpings of pudding without throwing up. Maybe on a Sunday afternoon, conjuring up piles of crinkly, colorful leaves and diving into them. The leaves huff up into the air and shower around the four boys in an autumn leaf shower.
When he gets to the end of the passage and steps into the shack, his heart tightens in his chest, his pulse in his head. Just get through the night, he tells himself, as the heavy door shuts and locks behind him.
