She was alone, lost in the forest with no family beside her, only darkness and uncertainty all around. Bella sat so closely by but it was as though she were in another world entirely; she was no longer a sister to Narcissa, having abandoned her for the Dark Lord. Both of her sisters leaving her side to be with a man. Narcissa adored her husband but she would have made time to fit all of them into her heart; she had done that. She pitied them, her elder sisters, that they had not seen fit to do so for her, but mostly she resented them for it.
Still, there was hope. Narcissa leaned in close and placed her hand upon Harry Potter's heart, felt it beating steadily beneath her fingers, felt the hiss of his whisper as he told her that her son still lived. Draco and Lucius, both still alive, both still living beside her.
And so she would fear not the outcome of the battle, would worry not of her former family, who had all left her to nurse her broken heart. No, Narcissa Malfoy had no broken heart, for she had her own true family, and they had not left her yet.
