The courtyard door stood open. Slowly I made my way to it pausing for a moment and allowing the night breeze to gently wrap around me with familiar scents before stepping outside. I could no longer feel him and felt the frustration surge in me as well as the annoyance with myself for wanting him back. I breathed in deeply letting the warm evening air fill my lungs.

“It’s for the best…” I whispered into the breeze shoving my hands deep into the pockets of my slacks.   My eyes fell to the stone walk and traced the curved lines of each individual rock trying somehow to focus my mind on the shapes, oblong, oval, round, searching the roughness, the porous detail, but to no avail. Slowly I began to walk, letting my heels scrape against the rock the sound echoing against the veil of the night.

I recalled our first meeting, the smoothness of his voice, the silk of his lips, the heat of his touch, how easily I had succumbed to his charms. Vampire against vampire. I had known better and nothing I had done or allowed had been wise but the mystery of him had been far more enticing than anything rational. But as I shuffled along I had to ask myself why? Why him? Many others had wandered through before. They had hastily scurried off upon meeting me or meant an unfortunate demise were I to be challenged. So why had I not done the same with him? The question throbbed at my temples. I knew why, as I crammed my hands further into the depths of my pockets, I just did not want to admit it.

I forced the thoughts from my mind squeezing my eyes closed and breathing in deeply again. “Foolishness.” I whispered to myself and within that moment the scent of the evening air had changed, the subtle smell of death wafted near. There was another around me now and it was not one I recognized, Xavier had not returned. Opening my eyes and scanning the yard I listened intently for the footsteps, the faint tempo of an immortal heart, the defensive growl growing in the hollow of my throat.

“Show yourself damnit.” I spat into the air around me.

The presence was coming closer, the aroma of death mixing with a soft delicate floral. Female but not one that I knew. The face appeared before me again, a vision floating in mid air, as a voice soft as kittens purr whispered within my ear.

“He belongs to me and I am here to collect him.” Evanescent fingers caressed my cheek. Hastily I swiped at the invisible mark, walking slowly in a circular motion as I scanned the courtyard.

“Stop with the damn tricks and show yourself. I won’t ask again.” I demanded.

Slowly she emerged from the darkness, a shapely body flowing red dress, mist rising around her legs and up through the frail material of her dress. Her eyes, deep green, glowed fiercely, her pouting mouth soft and crimson red. Her pale skin illuminated the spot where she appeared to float only inches above the ground but by the flush of pink in her cheeks it was obvious to see she had recently fed.. Cautiously she moved, the soft edge of her skirt dragging against the stone as she levitated toward me.

“Pardon me for my rude and thoughtless entrance. I am not usually this improper but I have grown weary of his games.” She smiled softly, her auburn brows raised over her scrutinizing eyes, “If you would so kindly deliver him to me…than we shall be on our way.” She stopped midway just to the edge of the fountain, her deep jade eyes studying me.

“And … this one you have come for? Does he have a name?” I asked flatly standing firm on guard for any quick moves she would attempt to make.

“Ah…Monsieur … please, you know his name and I know he is here.”

“You do?” I raised a brow surprised she could not sense that Xavier had already left. “Well then your rude entrance and cheap parlor tricks have proved to be a waste of your time and energy…now would you kindly remove you presence from my garden…I have no patience right now for none of this.” I spat fire into the words giving her fair warning of my sour mood.

She sighed lowering herself to the ground so she stood firm on her feet. Her small shoulders tensed as she pressed her lips together tightly. “Parlor tricks? Please Monsieur…I assure you I can do more damage then the mere act of tricks that entertain which entertainment is not on my agenda this evening.” her crimson lips curled back exposing the sharp white of her teeth. “I am in no mood for this either…monsieur.” With a swift move of her hand she flicked her dark auburn locks form her shoulders, her tresses catching like flames in the wind.

Indolently I grinned. “I will ask…no... I warn you one more time…Leave my property, my territory and no harm will come to you and all this…” I waved a tense hand in the air. “All this will be forgotten…now go on your way and bother me with this no longer.”

Her huff was small but her growl was deep. With a strange fierce delicacy it lingered in the air. Her jade eyes now glowed amber and her full crimson lips were pulled completely back from her teeth and the beauty before me had now turned deadly, her hands up and her fingers curled into claws. I braced myself for her attack as she raised into the air, hovered, glaring menacingly at me for a moment, then came at me with full force.

I grabbed her by her arms as she flung all her weight at me, snarling, her teeth snapping for my throat. She was not weak, by no means, and it took all I had to throw her from me, her landing on her derriere, momentarily stunned staring at me, before she was up and lunging at me again. I felt the sharp sting of her nails as she scratched across my forearm when I reached to grab her arms again, her fingers, quick, entangling in my hair trying desperately to tug my head back, spittle flying as she snapped for my throat or anywhere her mouth could reach.

“Fucking bitch.” I roared bringing my forearm level with her shoulder, slamming it against the side of her head and pushing her from me. Once again she fell but she was relentlessly, swiftly on her feet, coming at me like a mac truck, slamming against me again and again, snarling, snapping, trickles of blood rising upon my skin.

She would not give up this worthless fight easily and my patience, that was already on a short rope, was now gone and the anger was raging through me as I knocked her back, grabbing my arm and seeing completely red from where her teeth had grazed my skin.

“Enough.” I warned my voice booming through the night as her chest heaved and her eyes shot daggers into me.

“Oh…Monsieur…I don’t give in so easily and you..,” she leaned over placing her hands flat on her thighs as she tried to ease her breathing. Deeply she inhaled then straightened, abruptly standing upright. “You…monsieur… have no command over me. The only way to end this is to give me who I came for.”

“He is not here.” I said coldly. A black shadow fell over her eyes and I knew she was about to come at me again. “I warn you…I will not just knock you to the ground this time…this time I will end it. Be wise on what you decide to do for you know full well you can not take me.”

She grinned, menacingly, her hands clenching and unclenching. “He has worked his magic on you. Weaved his little demonic spell of lust…why else would you protect him so? Hear me…he is of no good to you…give him to me and as you said…this will all be done and forgotten.”

I rolled my eyes, trying to bury the growl rising in my throat but it escaped on its own. “Did you not hear me…he is not here….he left…”

“You lie Monsieur….!” Her eyes narrowed, her fingers curling into claws once again. “I guess we will see this dance to the end!” she hissed as she ran full force at me, her weight hitting me like a ton of lead as I wrapped my arms about her, the both of us tumbling awkward and twisted to the ground. She tried to force her hand, her teeth bared inches from my face but my strength was too much for her and it was far too easy to twist her body so her arms were locked within mine and she was now trapped underneath me.

“Give him to me.” she pleaded, her jade eyes widening as my lip curled back over my teeth. I was no longer listening or talking, red was all I saw and the anger had awakened the hunger and she was nothing more than blood pulsating inside of tiny veins. Her legs kicked, her breasts heaved, and her body writhed and twitched as my fangs sank deeply into the flesh of her neck.

I could no longer hear her pleas her voice had drifted into oblivion and all the remained was the rush of her blood flooding me with images she fought desperately to hold back. Swiftly I drank, the events of tonight and evenings past fueling my desire. She was breaking in my arms, her body fighting the pleasurable release but the images were pouring from her now and once again I saw rain forming small puddles on the pavement, dark wet strands of hair pasted to pale skin, Xavier lying on the ground, his eyes closed, his lips slightly parted, lifeless.

‘Louis! Louis stop!” The voice was familiar but seemed so distant, swirling and echoing around me. I ignored it and pressed on, her breath lapsing into small pants. “Louis!” I felt the tug on my shoulders, the pull on my arms. My grasp tightened around her body, threatening to crush her bones, as I was pulled backward. “Louis…stop…let her go!”

Xavier’s voice flooded my ears, his hold on me like a vice. “Louis! She is not worth it and if you don’t stop now…” he pulled me backward his chest heaving against my back. “Hell will surely come down on the both of us…just fucking stop and let the bitch go!”

I growled gasping for air as I released my hold, a devious smile spreading across her ashen face, Xavier’s arms wrapped around my shoulders from behind, his body pressed tight, holding me to him as she slowly raised and with a blink of an eye - she was gone.
