I rose early still seething with anger and frustration. The face I saw in Xavier’s memory still fresh and floating vividly in my mind. Who was this to him? Xavier’s blood did not give any answers and only unlocked small fragments of his secrets showing me nothing more than quick visual flashes and he, trying so desperately, to block them from me.
My temples throbbed, I was tired of thinking, the thoughts weighing heavy on my body as I settled into the leather chair near the fire. Slowly I massaged the sides of my head with the tips of my fingers, my eyes closed, working in small circles as the face loomed behind them. You wouldn’t think a vision of such loveliness could contort into something so fierce and brutal. Slowly I allowed my eyes to open as the image lingered in the darkness briefly then slipped away.
Xavier tried to move in silence but I felt his presence even before he made it to the bottom of the stairs, detected his shadow before it even slithered along the wall and his form filled the doorway. Softly he sighed leaning his body against the door frame, his eyes moving slowly from the floor to mine.
I reached for the lamp on the side table next to the chair, clicking it on to get a better view of him. He tried to straighten but his shoulders refused and hunched slightly forward, dark circles were stained underneath his eyes, his cheeks small sunken grey hollows. I had taken more from him then I had intended. Cautiously he entered the room, his feet shuffling across the floor as his eyes locked on mine. He was in a fragile state, wary and concerned that I was intending on finishing him, stiffening and steadying himself the best he could as he glared at me with a dull fire in his eyes.
“You lied to me.” I said low and threatening.
He flinched slightly and I did not know if it was from the small smile forming on his mouth or the boom of my voice that pained him.
“I did not lie to you Louis…” he breathed into the words heavily. “I simply chose not tell you.” Even in my anger I could not deny the beauty of his face, the smooth silk of his lips and fought the enticing rush that tried to burn through me as he came closer.
“But … now I have no choice lest you take it from me. Would you prefer to do that Louis? Ravage me here, my blood pouring into your veins? Would that be more suitable to you…Louis?”
My mouth watered, the taste of him teasingly stinging my tongue.
“What?” His brows knitted tightly above the dull blaze of his eyes. “Is that method not so appealing to you now?” He asked with frail sarcasm.
He was now standing directly before me. How brave of you Xavier I thought. I could sense his anger but there was no way it was going to measure to my own. I had been too trusting and feeling foolish, mislead by my own desire and now concerned with the real reason Xavier had wandered here in the first place.
“Tell me about the boy.” I said flat and cold narrowing my gaze on him.
Xavier shifted on his feet uncomfortably, looking away briefly as if to gather his thoughts, sighed then turned back to me.
“He is not of any importance…” His voice was frail, scratchy as if his throat were full of broken glass. “now.” the dull flame quickly faded in his eye.
“But he was.” I huffed. “Important enough for you to try end his life.”
“His life…?” Xavier sniggered weakly. “The kid has no life… he is nothing more than a hound for ….” Quickly his voice fell away.
“For…?” I stood abruptly swiftly Xavier stepped back cringing slightly.
“It doesn’t matter Louis…don’t you understand?” He spoke softly wrapping his arms about him. I could clearly see in his darkening eyes his thoughts begin to scurry about his mind like frightened little rodents. He continued almost breathless. “I know you think I came here for a reason but you are wrong. It was as I told you - merely passing through. I had no intention of remaining, I had no intention of meeting you or…”
Slowly he reached out; his hand shaking as he lightly touched my arm. His eyes became pleading, tender and warm. “My intention was to keep moving, to not be sniffed out like a damn rabbit….” Slowly his hand slid up my arm, leveling along my shoulder, then came to rest tenderly upon my cheek. “Believe me Louis.” he whispered “You were a pleasant distraction, more than I deserve…” he ran a shaky finger along my lower lip.
“Who is this woman?” I demanded gripping his wrist. His eyes widened but he did not try to pull away.
“So…” Xavier whispered. “You did see her.”
“Yes…I saw her.”
“What else did you see?”
The images began to run through my mind in quick succession, moving and blending until they were nothing more than a blur, the woman’s face twisting back into unbelievable beauty.
“Is she the one who made you?”
“No.” he said swift and firm.
“Then who is she?”
“She is nothing more than a devious bitch. Heartless and cruel - the worse form of seductive death. Forget you have ever seen her Louis. She is not worth the thought…believe me.” Xavier’s voice became annoyed and harsh. He tried to tug his wrist free from my grip but I held him firm and tight, his ghostly skin turning a light shade of blue under the pressure of my fingers.
“I have to feed Louis.” Xavier spoke the words soft but firm. “Unless…you plan to take the rest of what remains in my veins”
I ignored his words. “Be hungry I feel no pity for you. How dare you expect it when you won’t even tell me what it is you may have led to my doorstep?”
“I have led nothing and no one to your doorstep…” he spat. “You wanted me here…you deny that now? You have enjoyed the pleasures I have given you, the blood you have taken from my veins…”
This was not a fabrication. I had enjoyed everything he had offered immensely and although I was angry I really wanted him beneath me, my lips locked to his throat, his blood flowing smooth and lush as our entwined bodies pulsated and moved in synchronized passion. I threw his wrist from me it landing on his side like a lead weight. Slowly Xavier rubbed it, staring at the bruise that had formed.
“Leave then.” I spat, turning from him and moving to the window, crossing my arms in front of my chest. “But I warn you Xavier…if anything makes an appearance - you can include me on that list of those you are running from.”
Softly he chuckled behind me. “Threats…”
“I opened my home to you Xavier; I shared my bed with you…” I sighed heavily. “Make no mistake, Xavier, I do not make idle threats….”
I turned to face him again but he was gone.
