Once again I must make apologies for a severe shortage of updates. The first eight weeks of full-time motherhood have been a whirlwind experience, and my darling boy has kept me far busier than I ever could have imagined. From constant nursing to his separation anxiety (meaning I can’t set him down for more than a few minutes at a time), he has proven a very needy baby. But the blessings of his smiles, laughter and general happiness mean that I am fulfilled in ways I can’t even articulate.
According to what I read about baby milestones, Dexter is ahead of the curve in a lot of ways. He’s holding his head up pretty well, and he can take his own weight on his legs for about five minutes at a time. He loves to kick and punch the air in time to music, and he’s so alert that pretty much everyone who meets him comments on it. He is a regular little genius as far as we’re concerned.
Mark is a doting daddy to his son. You’ll never find a more dedicated father, of that I’m sure. I know he can’t be here as much as he wants - someone’s got to bring home the bacon after all - but any time he spends with Dexter is pure quality. It is a beautiful thing to watch. I can’t help but smile when I see them together.
And yes, he is “only a man” and makes mistakes that drive me up the wall. He sometimes tries TOO hard, which can be an aggravation to a sleep-deprived mother… but there is not a single thing that he does that I can complain about because everything he does, he does with love and adoration of his child. Dex is a lucky son-of-a-gun to have such a man in his life.
It’s amazing, though, to think how much our baby boy has grown so far. In his first seven weeks, he’s put on 3.5 lbs from his birth weight. It’s insane! He’s long and lean and grows like a weed. Those who go long periods between seeing him will comment on his obvious good health. I attribute it to his daddy, as Lord knows mummy is a bit of a lurgy lout. But so far he’s enjoying a hardy constitution, no doubt helped along with the triple helpings of breast milk he partakes of 12 times a day.
There is so much I could say right now, but the baby is anxious for another feed, and I mustn’t keep him waiting. I will be making more of an effort to update now that we’ve seemingly found some form of groove.
Until next time…
