As a note, Stefan is Netherlands
*****

With his brother being just two doors down, Alfred had begun to make it a habit to stop by after classes sometimes, mostly with the intention to eat whatever food Matt had lying around. Matt was used to it, but Arthur was not, and would spend the entire time glowering at Alfred.

“So…are you and Francis getting along okay?” Matt swiveled around in his chair, glancing at Arthur warily, once, before turning his full attention to Alfred.

“Mm? Yeah, sure.” He took another yoghurt-covered pretzel out of the bag he had next to him and shrugged. “He’s pretty cool.”

“Cool?” Arthur snorted derisively. “He’s a perverted frog.”

“So says you.”

“Well, I think it’s good you’re getting along,” Matt piped in before the conversation veered into an argument. “I like living with Arthur, so this worked out pretty well.”

“Yes, well, Matthew, you don’t hog all the space with your hair products or bring people by to shag them all hours of the day and night.”

“Well, has Stefan come by yet?” Alfred snickered, ducking when Matt aimed a box of tissues at his head.

“For that, you don’t get any more of my pretzels.” Still blushing bright red, Matt stood up and snatched the bag away, to Alfred’s dismay and Arthur’s obvious amusement.

“Aw, fine.” Alfred stretched, jumping up from Matt’s bed. “I should go get started on my lab report anyway. It’s due tomorrow.”

“Procrastinating, are we?” Arthur smirked a bit, leaning his elbow back on his desk.

“So long as I get it done.” Alfred waved as he walked backwards out of the room. “Later.”

When he returned to his own room, he found Francis was there already, typing away on his laptop, and occasionally glancing over to the book he had open next to him on the desk.

“Hello.” Francis stopped his work long enough to look over his shoulder and smile in greeting.

“Hey.” Alfred stepped farther into the room, closing the door behind him. He went over to his backpack, intending to pull out his lab notebook when something Arthur said made him pause. “Uh. Francis?”

“Mm?” He had gone back to typing. “I’m listening, what is it?”

“Are you going to be…you know, bringing a bunch of people back here?” Alfred ran a hand through his hair a bit awkwardly. “I mean, I don’t mind or anything, but, you know, if you do, could you put a tie or something on the doorknob? Just so I don’t walk in on anything.”

“Duly noted, Alfred.” Francis didn’t look up from the screen of his laptop, but Alfred could see the other’s shoulders shaking from laughter.

“I’m serious!” Frowning, he pulled his lab book out of his bag and plopped down onto his desk chair. “I’d do the same thing if I had someone in here.”

“Oho?” That caught Francis’s attention, and he turned towards Alfred with a smirk that was more lewd than curious. “Is there someone?”

“No.” Alfred shook his head, waving his hands in front of him to emphasize the point. “Not at all-well, I mean, not right now. It’s not like I’ve never done it before.”

“I didn’t assume that.” Francis tilted his head to the side a bit, still grinning. “With a face like yours? Would have been such a pity.” Alfred dropped his gaze down to the desk, trying really hard to focus on his lab work, because Francis was just being flirty and stuff, like Alfred had seen him act with pretty much anyone he thought was attractive. Even still, he felt his cheeks grow warm.

“Anyway.” Clearing his throat, Alfred picked up a pencil and started actually writing the lab summary. “I’m completely not kidding about the tie thing.”

“If you are so concerned, I will do as you say.” Francis went back to work his essay.

“Thanks.”

“It’s no trouble.” Alfred heard his phone vibrating and had to dig through his bag to find it, but he nodded so Francis knew he was still listening. “Living with each other requires us to honor certain requests, non?”

“Yeah.” Glancing at his phone, he saw he got a text from Kiku, asking if it was all right if he dropped by to play some video games. Alfred ultimately decided his physics could wait a few hours, and he sent a response before tossing his phone back into his backpack. “But I don’t think you did anything Arthur wanted you to.”

“Well, no.” Francis turned around in his chair again. “But he’s the exception.”

“Oh, right.” Alfred laughed a bit, before gesturing vaguely to Francis’s computer. “So what’re you workin’ on, anyway?”

“A critical essay on the roles, symbolism, and effectiveness of mythical creatures within Shakespeare’s play.” Francis shrugged one shoulder. “Standard analytical writing.”

“Uh-huh.” Alfred wasn’t exactly sure what Francis had just said, so he wasn’t sure if it actually was typical.

“It’s not something that interests you, I take it?”

“I just don’t know anything about it,” Alfred admitted. “Well…the analytical stuff you’re talking about…I like reading certain books. Like…uh, Fitzgerald.”

“Ah, Gatsby.” Francis smiled, brilliant and warm, with a softness to it that Alfred hadn’t seen before. “That is a lovely book. The language, the emotions it can elicit…some of the passages give you chills, don’t they?”

“Yeah.” Alfred nodded, noticing how bright the other’s eyes were all of a sudden, and he slowly realized this was how Francis looked when he was talking about something he really, really liked. Loved, maybe. It was a good look for him, not that Francis wasn’t normally good-looking, but-and those thoughts were going down a weird road. “S’what I mean.”

“Just the books themselves…that’s a big part of why I enjoy this.” Francis pointed to the screen of his computer, and his smile grew into a grin. “Although this part is just because I feel the need to talk about it all the time. But right now I’m just trying to finish it up…I feel like baking today.”

“You bake?” Alfred’s eyes widened slightly.

“Yes. And cook. I’m actually quite good at it.” Francis pushed his laptop back a bit so he could fold his arms on top of his desk. “A bit of a hobby, you could say.”

“That’s so awesome.” Alfred was actually leaning forward in his seat. “You should cook for me or something!”

“Really?” Francis laughed at that, loud and earnest.

“I mean-sorry, only if, you know, you want to.” He winced a bit, wishing he could have phrased his previous statement better. “I really like food, though.”

“So your brother tells me.” Still chuckling, Francis shook his head. “Do not worry about it; I enjoy cooking for others.”

“Seriously? Oh, man, you are the best, Francis.” Before Alfred could go on, there was a knock at their door. “Oh, probably Kiku.” He stood up from his chair and turned to Francis briefly. “….the games won’t be too loud. And we can turn ‘em down if you want.”

“Not a problem.” Francis grabbed a pair of headphones and plugged them into his computer. “I won’t be disturbed.”

“Cool.” Alfred went over to the door to let Kiku in, who exchanged a few polite words with Francis before heading straight for the game controllers. Alfred grabbed one for himself and flopped back onto the bed.

While the game was loading, he thought about how much of a lucky break he caught, since Francis was shaping up to be the best roommate ever, pretty much. In a weird way, he was grateful he was miserable with his brother for the first week, if it led to getting someone who would willingly cook for him.

Yep. Life was pretty damn good.

*****

The Student Building was as crowded and noisy as usual, but Francis tried his best to ignore it out as he attempted to peer-edit a paper. While Antonio was paying too much attention to Lovino Vargas at another table to be much of a bother, Gilbert really wasn’t helping Francis concentrate.

“So then, these two girls get in a fight since one of ‘em posted something fucking nasty about the other on facebook, and they crash through the sliding glass door into the pool.”

“Is that right?” Francis glanced up from his work long enough to give Gilbert a skeptical look.

“You’re just pissed since you missed the most awesome party ever.”

“I’m sure there will be plenty more, non?” He made a mark on the paper before setting it aside, giving up on trying to make any progress.

“And you said the party last weekend was the most awesome party, too.” Antonio interjected, finally deciding to join their conversation.

“Whatever.” Gilbert waved his hand a few times before switching topics. “So, Francis, is your new roommate more or less of a pain in the ass than Kirkland?”

“Hm? Oh, Alfred’s fine...”

“Wait, Alfred? Like, Alfred Jones?” Gilbert laughed. “Feliks told me that guy nearly burned down the psychics lab once!” Francis, sadly enough, could actually believe that might have happened. Accidentally, of course…

“If that’s true, I’m sure he did not mean to.” He shrugged. “Besides, what matters is that he’s far more tolerable than Arthur.”

“I guess,” Gilbert relented, and Antonio nodded in agreement. “But if he blows anything up, I told you so.”

“Deal.” Francis chuckled lightly, hearing the soft sound of the library clock tower’s bell over the noise of the room.

“Shit. Class.” Groaning, Gilbert snatched his bag up from the ground and slung it over one shoulder. “I have an awesome date later, so you’ll have to survive without me for the night.”

“Oh, did you finally decide to get into Feliks’s pants?” Francis put on an innocent look, but his smirk was too smug for it to be convincing. Antonio snickered. “Or skirt, as the case may be.”

“Fuck you.” He flipped the both of them off before disappearing out of the building. After a few more minutes, Antonio got distracted by the Italian sitting at the table across from them again, and Francis decided it was time he went back to the dorms to attempt and get some work finished.

Upon entering his room, he discovered Alfred had set up the whiteboard and easel and was scribbling diagrams and equations all over it. For a moment, Francis wondered if the other had finally snapped and this was turning into a remake of “A Beautiful Mind,” but upon further inspection, Francis realized he recognized some of the equations as some sort of calculus.

“Hello, Alfred. May I ask what it is you are doing?”

“Huh?” Alfred looked up from the board and grinned. “Oh, hey there, Francis. I’m doing my homework.”

“Homework?” Francis quirked one eyebrow, grabbing the paper he needed to edit and a green pen before he reclined back onto his bed.

“Yeah.” Alfred tapped the whiteboard with his finger. “Sometimes, if I make something bigger…you know, not just write it on paper, I can solve it easier. I don’t really know why.”

“Maybe you need more room to think?” Francis gestured vaguely with the pen he held. “Maybe on difficult problems you wander with your thoughts, and if you have a place to get it all down, like the whiteboard, it’s better for you.”

“Huh. I never thought about it that way.” He wrinkled his nose just slightly, not in disgust, but in thought. The gesture was endearing, almost adorable, and Francis checked the urge to grin. “You might be right though…I like seeing how everything comes together from the big picture, you know? Big thoughts to little ones, I guess.”

“Whatever makes sense for you.” Francis made a few marks on his paper before glancing up again. “I heard an interesting rumor today…you haven’t set the physics building on fire before, have you?”

“Ah…” Alfred visibly winced. “I have, actually. It was a complete accident though! I hadn’t ever used one of the lasers before, but I wanted to try it out and I didn’t wait for the professor’s help. I ended up putting the setting too high and aiming it where I wasn’t supposed to and it caught some stuff on fire.”

“I see…” Francis tried to cover up a laugh with a cough.

“Hey! It was an accident! Besides, it wouldn’t have caught the whole building on fire, there really wasn’t that much damage.”

“I believe you.” He settled on grinning. “But Alfred, you have to admit, that is very funny.”

“It really wasn’t at the time.” Alfred heaved a sigh and turned back to the whiteboard. Francis watched him, suddenly struck with the thought that Alfred was someone genuine, good hearted. Or at least he was someone whose intentions were rarely malicious. It was admirable, in a way, that sort of idealism.

“No…but I do believe you didn’t mean to do it.”

“Well, luckily the professor did too, but a lot of people think it was a prank.” Alfred glanced over his shoulder briefly, and Francis wondered if he was imagining the pink tint on the other’s cheeks. “So, you know, thanks for that…believing me, I mean.” He paused for a moment before he broke out into another smile. “And for those crepes you left me for breakfast this morning. Damn, you are a good cook.”

“Ah, you flatter me.” Francis laughed, shaking his head. “But you are very welcome. For both of those things.”

Alfred nodded and returned to his work, but Francis watched him still, watched him through all the equations and steps until he triumphantly drew a box around the answer in the corner of the board.

Oh man, there's just so many parts I like, such as:

“No.” Alfred shook his head, waving his hands in front of him to emphasize the point. “Not at all-well, I mean, not right now. It’s not like I’ve never done it before.”

“I didn’t assume that.” Francis tilted his head to the side a bit, still grinning. “With a face like yours? Would have been such a pity.”
Yeah Francis it would be such a pity. *nudge, nudge*

And:

“I mean-sorry, only if, you know, you want to.” He winced a bit, wishing he could have phrased his previous statement better. “I really like food, though.” <-- haha, this was just too cute. Oh Al, you are such much of food dork. XD

Also a bit of concrit or not:

"But right now I’m just trying to finish it up…I feel like baking today.”

The abrupt change in conversation was very...abrupt. I had to go "wait, what?" and take a double-take to make sure I didn't miss the transition or something. I'm not sure if that was suppose to be your intention or not, but I just wanted to let you know that I felt it was just very jarring and disrupted the flow of the coverstation. Of course all that is just my opinions and I did love what followed as noted above :]
