[Part 12] Germany x France / England x France (part 6b) anonymous September 18 2010, 04:22:09 UTC
France glared at him. Russia smiled back innocently. Most of the time, he appreciated the northern nation's ability to read him, but this time he didn't. His friend was always the sharp one.

"Why didn't I just go for you, mon ami?" he said melancholically. "Life would have been so much simpler."

"You know why," Russia said with a childish grin.

Yes. He wouldn't want America on his heels. It was too bad that they were still at the point of trying to discern whatever it was that was going on between them--or at least that much was true in Russia's case. He doubts that was what Russia was thinking though.

France's head sank backwards, eyes closed, in surrender.

"I don't know what's wrong with me, Russe." He sighed in an exasperated manner. "I don't know what to do."

Russia chortled. "The country of love is at a loss about love? How disconcerting."

France laughed bitterly and looked at his visitor. "La ferme. I am in the middle of a crisis here and you're just going to sit there and listen like a good friend as always." He sighed and rested his forehead on the palm of his hand.

Silence spread on them like a blanket.

"Then what if I do not simply listen?"

France looked up at his friend, surprised. Russia had always just sat and listened and never commented about anything in that particular topic. He had always assumed that his friend just did not have an opinion in the matter.

Russia's gaze went back to the ice cream. "Or are you afraid of my opinions, Frantsiya?"

The host leaned forward. His heart thumped. "You have never told me your opinion. Why do it now?"

The visitor smiled, not taking his eyes off the frozen treat. "It might be because you did not put vodkha in ice cream," he said jokingly. Violet eyes met blue. "Or it could be because the confusion in your eyes look like raging tempests."

France laughed and shook his head.

The larger nation rested his spoon on the lip of the bowl and continued to stare at France. "Think about it. What is the difference between them?"

He considered his visitor for a moment before answering off the top of his head: "Simple, mon cher, Allemagne cares for my clothes, Angleterre does not."

The other's brows rose.

He rested his crossed elbows on the table top and continued, "You see, when kissing, Anglettere always makes it a point to wrinkle my clothes no matter what it is I am wearing. Allemagne makes it a point not to."

The other bit his lip as he tapped the lip of the bowl with his spoon pensively. "I see."

"And when making love, Angleterre always always ruins them, regardless of whether I'm wearing something expensive," he said, a slightly pained expression showing in his face at the memory of all the beautiful clothes England had destroyed. All in the name of mind-blowing spontaneous sex, but still. "Allemagne goes out of his way to fold them for me before engaging in the act." Clinical. Clinical but oh so sweet and considerate.

Russia continued to look at him for a few more seconds and then put down his spoon. "The reason you like Angliya is because you resemble each other. You are both spoilt. He will not stop until he has devoured you completely and you him. That is of course, not to say that you want complete union. It means you are both very selfish."

France's smile dropped at that statement.

"And the reason why you like Germaniya is because he is not the same as you."

His brows knitted at that. "I am afraid I don't understand."

"It is simple," he said, his expression unreadable. "Each give you a different kind of happiness. Germaniya gives you stability and peace of mind whereas Angliya gives you excitement and chaotic beauty. Your relationship with the former fulfills your need for productivity whereas the latter provides you satisfaction in your need for destruction."

France looked at him, dumbfounded.

"Germaniya will give you the kind of love that will make you cheerful but Angliya will give you the kind of love that will give you melancholic satisfaction." He smiled wider at his host. "With Germaniya, you will grow and realize into union. With Angliya, you will endlessly try destroying each other and realize identity."

The room was silent again for a few moments.

"A-Are you saying that--that I should choose Allemagne?"

Russia laughed and began eating his ice cream again. "Not at all. You will find happiness with both. It is a matter of which kind of happiness you prefer."

"But you said that with Allemagne, I will grow..."

His visitor gave him a sympathetic smile. "Frantsiya, you and I know that growing is not always a happy endeavour. And union is not always good." He looked at his ice cream like a sad child.

France was at a loss for words. Russia had made...so much sense even with simple words.

"From what I have seen with you and Angliya in the past...you both tend to forget the rest of the world once you are in front of each other." He licked his spoon. "Anyone with good pair of eyes will know how much you love each other, perhaps a little too much. Angliya provides you with too much entertainment."

The host remained silent. He didn't want to derail whatever thoughts were crossing Russia's mind.

"I remember...you said both of you had once gotten into brawl merely because you did not believe in fairies."

He chuckled at that. He remembered it so well. It had been one of the pettiest arguments they'd had and still, they broke up for it. The reasons for their squabbles had ranged from something as petty as this to something serious like their rejection of each other's proposals. But they had good times too.

"Our relationship isn't completely just fighting and destruction, you know."

"Then why did he give you effigy of Eiffel tower during anniversary?"

France eyes widened at the memory and then laughed. "I can't believe you still remember that, Russe." He sat back. "It was made out of scones, which were, unfortunately like all of Angleterre's cooking, burnt. But he meant well."

"Of course he did," Russia said, picking at his ice cream. "His meaning well manifested perfectly in your bruised face."

France's hand instinctively went to his cheek, as if to try and feel for the bruise that was no longer there. He'd almost forgotten how hard England's scones could be. He had to admit--England did look good wearing that pirate hat, screaming France's name desperately while he--

"With Germaniya, you feel cheerful but a incomplete," Russia continued, breaking his thoughts, "but with Angliya, you feel extremely turmoiled but satisfied."

France looked at him with a scowl. "Both seem to spell doom for me."

Russia smiled at him. "Da. But happiness cannot be attained without certain sense of surrender to your doom, da?"

The host laughed rather sadly and looked at the man opposite him. He rubbed his face with his right hand. "You did not really give me any advice, mon ami."

"What I had offered was opinion, not advice," he retorted with an innocent smile. "I can only advice you to choose carefully. I cannot make decision for you."

France ran a hand through his locks. "I know," he whispered quietly.

Silence filled the room for a few minutes.

"You will be accompanying me to Opera National de Paris tonight, da?" he said, enthusiastically changing the subject. He put his spoon down, bowl already empty. "They are playing Yevgeny Onegin. It will be nice to bring stories home."

He looked at his friend fondly, exhaustion in his eyes. "Of course, mon ami. You know how I adore Messrs. Pushkin and Tchaikovsky's works."

1. What Russia says here about the pairings is actually my own theory on the matter. I'm sorry for omitting a number of words. The Ivan in my head was talking too.
2. Russia and France are BFFs...what can I say?
3. In case you're interested, they are currently showing Yevgeny Onegin in Opera National de Paris until October 11.

@Everyone I seem to have this strange power of making FrUK fangirls betray their OTP. I'm amazed. Thank you so much for the comments! They have brightened my day!

@anon1 Thanks a lot for that correction! I always welcome constructive criticism. :P By the way, you're pretty fast.

@anon2 But warnings extinguish excitement, doesn't it? Hahaha Well, I did promise that the comments will not alter the ending I had intended. We'll see, we'll see. I will have to apologize ahead of time if I make you hurt just a bit more. I can't help myself. Hahaha More importantly, thank you for your patronage! Comments like these make me smile.

@anon3 AmeCan bromance is actually something I'm told that I'm good at, thank you. :D I'm glad that France came across exactly as I wanted him to.

@anon4 Ah one of the few FrUK supporters in this fic! Hello hello, I'm glad that you liked my version of the characters! I thought I was going a bit too far with characterization. And I like how Europeans argue sometimes--so intense. Hahaha thank you!

@anon5 You are not alone. Don't feel bad. :P

@anon6 Another FrUK supporter! I haven't seen much current events fics in the fandom. I think I'm going too far, actually. One of these days, I'm going to be banned from this fandom for mentioning some sensitive current event thing. I fear for myself. Nonetheless, I'm glad you like the current events touch! Thank you very much for the praise! (take note: I jumbled a few events so they're not all chronologically in order. But the major ones are.)

@shamelesslyEuropeananon You are quite observant. I was afraid that no one would see the implied gloating. Well, I try my best to follow my own prompt, but I'm planning to put some bonuses along the way. Even if I do put as much current issues into this, this is still Hetalia, and I'll try to keep that in mind. I agree; it is unfair that I asked you guys about the pairings at this stage, but I couldn't help it. I'm using it to gauge whether I'm hinting too much about which ending will come true. And Prussia, he's awesome like that; both in cannon and my headcannon. Italy--he's a mystery. I think I need a proper book to decipher him. Thank you so much for reading! The next ones are going to be a little bit more serious, so bear with me. By the way, that last part with Germany also broke my heart a bit. *hugs* Your long comments entertain me so, ma cherie.

@anon7 Thank you! I like Belgium a lot, actually. And I really like angry Ireland the most. I'm glad I'm doing you an extra service by serving up news. Thank you!

@anon8 I haven't explored the FrUK in this yet, so expect it. I'm glad you like the France/Germany here. :D That means a lot, thank you.

@Germananon I'm glad I lightened up your day! I know how that feels because that's how I feel when I read other fics. Well, in the case of monogamous relationships, I gave this the TCE treatment so it doesn't dissolve into crack. It's hard to make it sound serious while being polygamous for me. (and I think by that you might have already deduced my upbringing) Thank you, you have flattered me greatly. I would've thought that people from these countries would hate me for this. Hahaha

@anon9 T-That's...a lot of requests. I feel like the star Germany has wished upon in he official strips. Roma...hmmmm. Should I? Wouldn't people wank about it if I post about the Roma expulsions? I was planning to keep that part to myself out of fear of being banned. Hahaha thank you for your thoughts! I really appreciate them.

@anon10 Don't worry; your sentiments have reached me and I'm very very happy for them and tha you put effort into telling me. Thank you so much! :D

So it's:
Germany: 7
England: 4
No preference: 1

I'm quite amused, to say the least.

Out of curiosity (because I'm a very curious person), is the one who commented on my prompt reading this too?

I love this so far. The characterisations are lovely; it's such a relief not to read insane!Russia for once in a fic set in the modern day, and, albeit that being most of his canon character, a France that doesn't run around naked molesting people.

The dialogue is gorgeous too - I love you for how you've charactised Russia; one of my favourite interpretations of him is his shrewdness, but his choice to remain quiet most of the time. :)

Concering current affairs... I think I would agree with anyone referencing the expulsion of the Roma. Although it might be kind-of controversial, I think this fic ESPECIALLY needs to concentrate on something that is a sore spot and pressing issue for both France and Germany. I mean, the implications that have been flying around about France and Sarkozy, and it being reminiscent of things... France and Germany are having a bit of a tiff about it at the moment, it seems :S (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-11345165)

Oh, and English!anon is shamelessly rooting for her own country, pfft. Whilst I love Germany/France for some lovely Euro politics, FrUK is my favourite, after all!

Sooo uhhh, mostly off-topic comment aside, great work, anon! :D

I must say that this is pure brillaince anon. Your characterisation is spot on and I particularly like your Russia (a non-insane one always makes a nice change).
I am rooting for FRUK though. Your Germany?France is adorably sweet but I'm backing Britain.

Just for an update on stance: Still backing dear Deutchland, but I kind of smell doom for him now. Guess I shall tread carefully from here onwards, D:

I actually agree completely with your analysis! The type of love Germany and England represent to France, one being stable and loving while the other being turbulent but magnificent. And I personally feel it doesn't bode well for Germany at all, from the way the story unfolds.

But like other reads have pointed out, we shall just leave the matter to your talented hands and we will see! Not trying to influence you or anything.

*hugs dear Germany close in case of an impending heartbreak*

Did you just write the best Russia ever? *:* anonymous September 18 2010, 15:02:31 UTC
ShamelesslyEuropean!Anon is deeply in love with you and your Russia. Good god, what an interesting, observant, childlike but sad, and self-aware characterization of him. Every single word he says about both pairings is my headcanon, to a 't'.
The really interesting thing, I believe, is that it doesn't take much (hasn't taken much in history) for both pairings to change sides, for Germany to become the crazy passionate storm for France, and England the quiet, loving and familair support (from the beginning of the century till the German-Franco pacts for EU, it was like this).

THis is why I still have hope for both, I still root for Germany even though I'm a FrUK shipper, damn, you got talent 8) (among other things now, because he's been able to grow and mature into something else in his relationship, while England makes himself and France's love fester and be unhealthy, even if what Russia says...is quite true, because France's ultimate happiness may not be what is good for him), but I still think it'd be awesome to see Francis choice either way; will he choose with passional judgement and the heart, like he's been known to do throughout history? Or will his love and want for stability and peace and a healthy love that characterizes the nation nowadays prevail?

Much much love for France-Russia friendship and the interaction you wrote for them. I see that TCE reference, are you one of its authors? Because if you are, you're two of the best four fanficcers in the whole fandom <3
Lots of love for current news and things happening now. I understand your fear, because some people in the meme are exaggeratedly senstive, but just know that, for me, it makes the story ten times more awesome.

And finally...

HOT AMERICA/RUSSIA REFERENCE ♥

OMG, France and Russia as BFFs, you can have my first born for this only, anon! And your Russia is so much love &heart;

You've heard so many times already, but I must say this again: your analysis are amazing XDD!!!! I completely agree.

However, as the European!anon said it so well, that's also the reason I root for GerFra: the world has changed, each nation should (and probably, must) give up a little bit of themselves, be less selfish, learn to work together, not against each other. France, as unbelievably as it seemed, has tried (really hard) to do so, and succeed. The EU and France-Germany relation are very much admired (and envied) here in (East) Asia. We often wonder how they could achieve that, they have hundreds years of war, the most recent was still so fresh, and yet they can forgive & go forward. It gives us hope, that one day, we would be able to forget our hatred as well, one day we could build a union like EU (I know the union has its fair share of defects, but compared to our regional alliances, it's like something from our wildest dream;_;). we can't, and probably remain so for a long time, but that's another story

France-Germany friendship is, I dare say, something the world's never seen before. Such friendship, as your dear Russia put it so beautifully, helped them grow, and by doing so, realize that they're capable of change and sharing. I think they need that, and the world need that too. Perhaps, who know, France would be happy with his new identity, since giving also means receiving, and receiving from others may be a good thing for his ego^^.

Tl;dr, I love your story and my love for GerFra hasn't changed. Though I would never stop loving FrUK, just not this time, sorry ^^;;.

Also, I found it really interesting that we had UK and German anons here who, understandably, rooted for their respective country. There was even an Italian anon ^^. If there's any French anon out there, who would they want their country ends up with, I wonder ^^;;??? please, French anon, please answer, I'm dying to know

French anon here :)

I totally share the author's analysis of France's relationship with England and Germany and therefore, I have to admit I'm as confused as my country. My only conclusion is that only a threesome would satisfy France (but not the two others, I'm afraid).

But I'm a bit for Germany, though I feel I'm biaised cause I live near the border. But also mostly because I find him more suited for a long relationship (and nothing forbids France to take England as a lover after all *gets shot*)

I never commented on this but goog god, let me confess my love for you from this GerFra fan from Italy.
The little tibdits on Europe news, everyone's voices, it's just exactly how I always wanted it to be and this is the fic I've always wanted to read.

A special mention goes to Prussia and Russia, because I just love how you move them. I really do.

Needless to say, I'd love this to end with a GerFra. Maybe England can be comforted by his bff Portugal ;D
