[Thank you for the prompt - I'm non-op FtN (that's not a typo for M) myself, so this is a topic that intruiges me greatly ... Actually, what I would kind of like to see is a nation actually transitioning. Possibly via magic. Hmm. captcha says 'concurs steuben', I think it wants Prussia next.]
England didn't actually realize his new charge was a girl at first, was the thing. Sweden and Finland had talked about a little boy, and when England had called him a boy, he hadn't complained - her. Called her a boy. And she was so good at avoiding baths. Not until she'd come home one afternoon covered in mud with a suspicious quantity of feathers stuck to her shirt had he been able to press the point. And even then, she'd splashed about so much he only realized when he was getting her back into her clothes.
He'd been so suprised at first that it took him a moment to realize she was shaking with the cold; April was April, and her hair was still soaked. So England finished dressing her - suddenly a lot more careful about where he put his hands - took her inside, and asked. "America, why didn't you correct me when I said you were a boy?"
"I am a boy," she said, and then she burst into tears.
Propriety be damned; his little bro - little sister was hurting. He pulled her into his lap and rocked her back and forth. "Sweetie, this isn't pretend. Boys have. Well. I don't like you any less because you're a girl, I promise." Dammit, how was he supposed to respond to this?
America just sniffled into his shoulder. "But I'm not a giwl! I'm not! Girls are sinful, and they gotta do what they're told, and they wear dresses. I don't wanna wear dresses! I don't care! I'm not! Engwand, don't make me be a girl!"
She was in a dress right now but that was just because she only looked four or five, she wasn't old enough for trousers, and England had said so. Damnation. What was the comforting thing to say here? "But boys have to do as they're told, too, America." Not that America had ever been any good at it -
"But then they gwow up. Giwls never gwow up." She was breaking out the Adorable Lisp. That meant it was serious. The Adorable Lisp, and the Pleading Eyes, and oh, England remembered being tiny and in dresses at Rome's insistence, and how damn funny Rome had thought it was, and how much he'd hated it and how good it felt to hold a sword -
He'd never been able to resist the Pleading Eyes.
"You're a girl whatever I do," he told her, and held up a hand to forestall another outburst of tears. "But I promise I won't tell anybody, and I'm not going to make you act like one. You can pretend to be a boy if you'd rather. As long as you work hard and get good at boy things, like hunting and building things and not being scared of thunderstorms. Okay? I'll make you my - my apprentice at statesmanship."
"Thank you, Engwand," America said, and hugged him tight.

"You know, girls can wear whatever they like now," England suggested, more than two hundred years later. "It's the 1960s. Aren't you supposed be - you know. Being yourself?"
"I am myself." The grin was the same, the twinkle in the eyes was the same. The request to help with her breast bindings, well. Even if they had been in a bit of, well, an altered state, he had no complaints whatsoever about the preceding night. He hoped to have the opportunity to undress her again and again, and if dressing her afterwards was part of the deal, that was fine too. It was just that. Well.
He had never told. He kept his promise. But it didn't make sense anymore.
"Only you put yourself through this every morning. There's nothing wrong with being a woman. Good god, you were happy enough to be a woman last night - "
She shut him up with a kiss. When she pulled away he was shivering and flushed, and she laid a finger over his lips. "I wasn't," she said, and smirked at his alarmed look. "I was happy to be making love to you. I was happy it was you, England. Love is what it's all about, don't you know? But that has nothing, nothing, to do with being a woman. I just made do with the body I had."
"Hungary admitted she was a girl. Nobody thought less of her for it."
"I'm not Hungary, though. I'm me. This is who I've always been. Now help me with these. And be quiet, there are people waking up."
England tugged on the elastic as she directed, and watched her pull on two undershirts and ran a hand through her hair. It was almost long enough to look feminine right now. But right outside the tent, she could have been any young man who liked rock music and bell-bottom jeans and free love and just hadn't, for some reason, lost any affection for shaving regularly. He rubbed at his own chin, which was developing a fine coat of stubble. "I don't care either way," he muttered. "Really. I've had men and women both for lovers."
"Good. Then you won't mind having a boyfriend now, right?"
He smiled helplessly. What else could he do?
America unzipped the tent, and they walked out into the morning mist together. Nobody looked twice at two men holding hands.

YES! I was hoping someone who identified similarly would fill. This fandom is so huge I refused to believe I was alone in the whole "more than two genders" thing. As for a fully transitioning nation, that's pretty much my secret headcannon for America. So if you ever see anything, uhhh to that effect chances are it was me.
I know I didn't specify pairs and maybe I should have since I'm not real big on USUK, but way to make me reconsider! I really, really like this, just. Everything oh man. thankyousomuch!

[Ooooh. I look forward to it, if you do write and post that.]
I'm not either, really, but it seemed like England couldn't possibly have missed America being physically female, so the first scene sort of wrote itself, and the second seemed like a natural progression. Thank you, and glad you liked it! This was commentboxed in a sudden spate of inspiration, but I may have to do more with this universe. Any requests?

ASDHIUSDNCJADHCI HOLY FUCK I AM FLOORED. I WAS JUST THINKING ABOUT AMERICA BEING FTM TODAY AND THEN I SAW THIS AND MY JAW FUCKING HIT MY DESK. I THINK I'M PSYCHIC. OMG.
In other news, FTM!ANON LOVES YOU A LOT. I've read only a few other fills (and independent fics) that dealt with any sort of gender-fuckery that WASN'T simple gender-bending; all of them were great and all of them were written by a gender-weird person. XD
I love how sweet England is when America's a kid, and that he ultimately doesn't get it but is fully supportive and loves him anyway. That's the greatest feeling in the world when someone can tell you "I don't get it but I know it makes you happy so I'll try my best to support you." ;u;
Now I really want to write something like this where America is accidentally outed to the other nations and, in an attempt to explain himself, says "I'm a hero no matter what, but I'm not Wonder Woman - I'm Superman!"

And now I really want to read this! Please do, it would be a very fun analogy (and I'd love to watch everyone's reactions ...).
Thank you, and I'm glad you enjoyed the fic. England was fun to do. I felt bad using 'she' throughout, but given that England was the POV character it was inevitable. I think he does Get It eventually, it just takes a long time.

I've officially started writing that fic - which will probably rather long and involved, but should contain lots of lulz and very realistic tranny funtimes. (Yay for writing fic based on your own experiences!)
The use of "she" jarred me at first but then I realized that it was because it was written from England's perspective, so that made a lot of sense to me. (Not sure how other anons would have read it since reading "she" when referring to an FTM could be very confusing. Hopefully they picked that up, too.)

http://miaoujones.livejournal.com/7010.html (This AU has MTF!Austria and genderqueer!Italy. I think I mis-remembered the author being genderqueer, but it's still an excellent fic and deals with gender/sex in a very well-done way. (I'm not sure how to phrase it less awkwardly, lol.))
http://hetalia-kink.livejournal.com/6850.html?thread=10807490#t10807490 (This has MTF!Hungary. I seem to have been mistaken about this author as well. OTL I know there was at least one trans-related fic with a genderqueer author, but my dumb ass apparently didn't bookmark it. Oh well. These are lovely and very very very hot fics anyway. And for some reason they all involve Prussia, Hungary and Austria. Go figure.)
Also, FTM!anon is totally joinin' the party! It might take me a few days to finish writing it (it'll probably be rather long but should have plenty of lulz and tranny funtimes based on my own experiences), or I could start posting it in bits. Posting might be kind of sporadic, though, since this might be a very busy week... I'll decide tomorrow after I've slept. x___x

An awesome fill. Probably exactly what OP wanted, from this notOP's POV. Very very good, subtle and not preachy/speechy in the slightest. Very natural. I love how England found out, and poor America's reasoning for not wanting to be a girl; and her, HIS, damnit, his older self being so matter-of-fact about the whole thing, very not dramatic ^^ AND WOODSTOCK, HELL YEAH!
curious anon is curious...would Matt and Francis know?

I think Canada knows, and he's sympathetic and helps keep the secret. Power Of Brodom Forever, right? France . . . no clue. He might have worked it out for himself and been cool with it, he might be completely in the dark. I can't see America actually telling him if it could be avoided.
Yay! I'm glad yyou realized it was Woodstock, even though I was extremely vauge. (Not on purpose; I wrote this is a hurry.) As for America's reasoning, some of it was based on the Puritan ideas of gender roles, which he really did not fit, but that was just what drove him to conceal his sex so determinedly so early, not what actually caused it, and I hope that came through in the second scene - if his first settlers had been into gender equality he might have been willing to grow up as a girl, but it wouldn't have lasted.

Hey anon, if you ever read this, would you like to be friends? I uh, this fic hits a little close to home. I'm glad England is so accepting of America in this. Thanks for writing something so awesome!
