He glares at the glass case from his position beside it. He shakes his head and begins to silently chastise himself when a soft knocking resounds through the room and Japan trudges inside, eyes bagged and face haggard.

“Good evening, Norway-san,” he greets blearily and offers a small smile.

Norway stands up again and nods. “You look exhausted. Have you slept at all?”

Japan scratches his head sheepishly. “I have not. There are more pressing matters to attend to.” He sets down his clipboard and moves to one of the machines at Denmark’s bedside. “Has there been any change?” He asks as he swiftly replaces a bag of clear fluid.

Norway shakes his head. “Not really…” he points to the heart monitor. “His heart sped up a few times for a few seconds, but that’s it.”

Japan clicks his tongue, disappointed. “I see. Well, I do have some good news. America and England have just arrived and are on their way to now. America’s brought some specialists in alien studies and England has several of his most prestigious doctors.” He offers a small smile. “Denmark-san will be in good hands.

Norway nods. “Thank you.” He watches as Japan moves to the head of the case, peering inside. “Is there anything new?”

Japan presses a gloved hand against the glass, leaning forward and squinting against the slight glare from the lights. “There is quite a lot that is new. How much of it will prove to be useful, I am afraid I do not know yet. They are planning a laser removal trial for the morning.”

Norway pulls a hand through his hair. “They can’t try it sooner?”

Japan shakes his head. He’s still staring intently at Denmark. “I am afraid not. We are preparing the necessary equipment, but it will still not be ready until the morning.”

“Is there anything that they can do to expedite the-”

Japan holds up a hand to stop him, still peering in the case. “Norway-san, I apologize to interrupt you, but…you did say that there was no change over the last several hours, correct?”

Norway steps forward curiously. “Yes…he hasn’t moved at all. Why?”

Japan straightens up and motions for Norway to look.

“He is crying.”

Norway’s eyebrows shoot up and he quickly moves to stand next to the smaller man, pressing a hand to the glass and staring in.

Denmark’s face is the same as before, still stock still and ashen, but a slow, steady stream of tears have began to slip out of the corners of each eye, clinging to his chin before releasing and coming to rest in small pools under his head.

Japan grabs the clipboard and scribbles something down. “Perhaps we were incorrect in our theory of sleep paralysis?” He glances at Norway. “If that is the case, then I would imagine he is in a great deal of pain.”

Norway shakes his head slowly, eyes still locked with the silent tears. “I don’t think that’s it…” he says quietly. “I’ve known Denmark for a very long time. He’s been shot, stabbed, stoned…Prussia impaled him once. He’s never once cried over an injury.” He straightens slightly. “In fact, this is only the second time I’ve ever seen him cry in the hundreds of years that we’ve known each other.”

Japan blinks curiously. “When was the first time?”

“When the Kalmar Union was dissolved.”

Japan hums thoughtfully. “Do you suppose he is having a nightmare?”

Norway shrugs. “Maybe?”

Japan sets the clipboard down. “Let me call the doctors that are monitoring his brain activity from upstairs. They may have new information for us.” He moves away to stand by the door again, taking the mounted phone off the hook with a tiny click.

While Japan speaks quietly into the receiver, Norway continues to stare at Denmark’s still falling tears. It’s even more unnerving than his lack of physical activity. He sighs deeply and pinches the bridge of his nose; he’s having unpleasant flashbacks to their past.

Japan appears at his side once again. He looks perplexed. “It is…definitely not what I was expecting.”

“What is it?”

Japan motions to Denmark. “Fifteen minutes ago, he had a huge surge in endorphin levels. There’s so much activity going on in his brain, if I did not know better, I would assume that he was wide awake.” He turns to Norway. “He is not having a nightmare. He is having a very good, very lucid dream.”

Norway blinks. “So, why is he crying then?”

Japan shakes his head. “I do not know. You know him better than I, Norway-san. What could possibly make him so happy that he would be moved to tears?”

“Good night, Niels.”

Niels exhales slowly and rolls over to wrap his arms around Mathias’ torso. Once he’s resettled himself, he leans in and gently presses his lips to the Dane’s chest, above his heart.

“I love you,” he mumbles sleepily.

Norway crosses his arms and glances back down at Denmark.

“I…don’t know….”

A/N: Whoarrrg, sorry that ended so suddenly. I’m falling asleep at my computer. :V Updates will be a little slower over the next two days since I will be out of my house, but I should still have at least one chapter a day up if I can find the time to write.

Also, I have a question for the OP! I have several ideas for an ending; one good, one angst riddled and awful. Is there a particular way you’d like to see the story end? I suppose I could always just write both endings, but I figured I ought to see if you had any preferences.

Good night, everyone!

Excellent characterization of Norway. I loved the way he showed his concern about Denmark and how he got embarrassed when he realized that he was petting Denmark's head. It's the little moments like these that make me smile even with the larger plot unfolding in Denmark's head.

Then I got to the "crying out of pure happiness" part and I went ;_; once again. Dramatic irony at its finest. I wish I could say more about this part, but really, the most meaningful thing I have to say is that I'm still loving this fill and the way you're writing the characters.

As for the ending, I'd much prefer a happy or at least semi-positive one (because Superman did at least get that with his friends rescuing him, right?), but if you really believe that an angsty one would make for a better ending, go for it! I may be the OP, but in the end, I'm not the one writing the story and coming up with all these great ideas for it.

Oh anon, my heart. I just read all of this so far in one shot after having eyed this fic on the fills list for a few days, and I'm very glad that I did. Your characterization of Denmark is unexpected but excellent, and the same goes for Norway, really. Denmark's heart's desire makes perfect sense, and you've left me wondering if other nations ever want the same - to just be able to lead simple lives, the way their people do, without all the complications that nationhood brings.

Great job. I'll definitely be checking back for more.

Please say Tony was the specialist on alien studies that Japan was talking about! Also, the fluff is killing me, in a good way. Don't stop writing this!

New-commenter!anon here.

The updates came so quickly I didn't have time to read them until last night. ^__^ But it's such a wonderful story! I don't think I've ever seen a Denmark story this introspective before (if introspective's the right word). He's usually not even a main character!

Reading through the story, I felt sad for Denmark, but didn't cry because I normally don't in fics. But the last bit got me. The image of Denmark crying and then finding out the reason why he's crying - I had to cry with him. Thankfully, my roommate was asleep by then so I wasn't bothered ~__^ It's just...Denmark pretty much lost his whole family when the Kalmar Union broke up. And of course he would cry if Norway said he loved him. People don't cry from happiness. They appear to, but what they're really crying over is the knowledge it could never happen in real life. Children don't cry after watching happy movies because they still believe whatever it was could happen. So somewhere, at the back of his mind, Denmark knows that this is only a dream.

From now on, whenever someone says that Denmark is the happiest country, I'll say they're wrong. I'll say Denmark's children may be the happiest people, but the country is certainly not the happiest. How could he be? His family left him, one by one.

I think you should do both endings. Just remember that people tend to (or at least just me) consider the first one the "real" ending, and the second an "alternate" ending. So be careful about which you put first. ^__^

Wow this is so beautiful!
I am loving this fic so much, this part made me want to cry. *squeee*
*sniffle*
Please continue this lovely story.

I love DenNor, this is just tugging at my heartstrings. And I loled at the moose and the fishing and camping references. Happy child Iceland also surprised me but in a good way. And Sweden, oh gosh, so talkative! :)

The love between Niels and Mathias is so heart-warming and beautiful, makes me so happy and feel warm inside just reading it. I hope that Norway realizes how he really does care about Denmark before time is up. And Denmark crying while in the middle of the dream, WAHHHHHHHH, I want to hug him. And when Norway mentions that Denmark was moving around in his sleep, grasping at the empty bed, my heart was like *squeeze* - because he's wanting to hold onto someone (YOU, Norway you dummy) he loves. ;___;

;3; I am sending you many many hearts and kisses and love for writing this story. You're so wonderful. Please continue!
