There was a tapping on Norway’s shoulder and she turned to see Iceland, her little brother standing next to her.
“How was your practice, Iceland? Did you have fun?” She asked him and stood up too.
“Yeah, sis. I can’t wait for the next game. Couch says I can join JV.” The usually quiet boy was visibly excited about something.
“Really? That’s great Iceland! But are you sure that you’ll be okay? JV kids are tougher…”
The grinning couch walked over to the group of kids. “Hey guys.”
“Hey Couch Denmark.” Liet said.
“That’s right. Iceland has a lot of talent for a freshman. We’ve talked about this a bit, and if your parents agree, you can move up to join the JV team starting Monday.” He looked at the girl standing next to him. “Are you his sister? You two share a remarkable resemblance.”
“Yes, I’m Norway. Iceland is my little brother.” Norway smiled shyly at the dashing young man who was couching her little brother. “But I’m not sure if my parents will agree to let him play JV.”
“But sis!” Iceland interjected. Norway turned to him and put her hands on his shoulders in a reassuring gesture.
“Iceland, JV kids are older and bigger and play tougher. I don’t want you to get hurt.”
“I’m certain that won’t be a problem. I’ll make sure that Iceland gets treated fairly and there will be no rough play allowed. I’ll gladly spend some extra time with you and the other freshman players to teach you guys how to play at the JV level.” Couch Denmark promised.
Norway looked at the man silently, sizing him up. He seemed sincere and her brother did love hockey so much. He was always going on about wanting to play JV ever since he saw the school’s star player Canada shoot three straight goals in a row at the first game of the season two weeks ago.
“All right then. We’ll ask our parents.” She finally replied.
“Great, then see you later Norway, Iceland. You’ll be the hockey sensation of the season in no time,” Denmark winked and tipped his hat at the two siblings, then walked away. Norway looked after him thoughtfully for a second, then quickly ran to catch up to her friends heading outside to the buses.
