“I…what?”
“Don’t argue, there’s a dear, just go and take the pelt away.” She steps close to him, leaning up to his face, and she smells like something rancid and what is wrong with those eyes?
Alfred flinches back, and she laughs again. He realizes she is pressing something into his hand, and when he looks down he sees Mathew’s drawstring bag. “Thank you for bringing a poor old woman dinner. You may need that light,” she says, and glances up at the sky. The trees are spaced well enough in this little grove to see by moonlight, but that won’t be so in many places. Alfred knows that by experience now.
“Listen,” he starts, “I don’t know what’s happening here, but all I really want is - ”
“If you want to survive,” the woman says coolly, “then you’ll do what Grandmother says, yes? And Grandmother says to go north,” she raises a trembling finger and points to her right, “And take the pelt.” She turns and begins to walk away, back into the shadows of what must be the south.
“How do I know he’ll be asleep?” Alfred stutters, at a loss.
“He will.”
He loses sight of her as she blends into the trees like a part of the forest itself.
“But…Hey! This is crazy! How’m I supposed to just take his fur off of him? I’m even injured, look - ”
“You’re a good boy,” comes back from somewhere in the forest, and then she is gone, as quickly as she came.
Alfred takes two steps and realizes that his ankle doesn’t hurt anymore.
I literally flailed when I saw this pop up into my mailbox and I had to do a double take to make sure it wasn't just a response to another part.
Love, love, love, love, so much love. Seriously this is such a fantastic fill and I'm happy to see it return and can't wait to see what happens next.
I don't remember if you said you were mixing folk/fairy tales but think I vaguely recognize the was hinted at in this part though maybe it wasn't Russian when I read it, so many of those old folk tales get passed around from culture to culture, anyway I just yeah...loved it.
You can keep posting in this part until it maxes out. They just close them early to allow people to keep posting parts to the original to make it easier to find. Once this maxes out you move to the past fills post.
Author!Anon has great joy.

It makes me so happy to hear that you're enjoying this. :D
As to the folktales, yes, I'm mixing a few together, while trying to keep some elements of Little Red. My best count is...four folktales? But it's hard to judge, since old stories intertwine and build off of each other. And...yeah, including Red, two of them didn't...turn out to be Russian. Exactly. >>; ANYWAY.

YOU CONTINUED!!! This is great; can't wait to read what is going to happen next... so is Alfred going to listen to the woman or is he going to be Alfred and somehow mess things up by trying to not mess things up? XD
