“Always glad to lend a hand, mon ami,” France answered weakly. “And, ah...what do you want me to do with...this? Until you return for it, anyway.”
“Oh, anything you like,” Russia said lightly, still with that horrible smile. “I said a box earlier, da? Just stick it in a box, if that's easier for you.” He began re-buttoning his shirt again, hiding the hole in his chest from view. “Or destroy it, if you like. Ah, that's not a bad idea!”
“You don't mean that, cheri.”
“Oh, but I do! It's a troublesome thing, that heart. You saw me earlier, da? Crying like a baby, how embarrassing! It makes it so much more difficult to do things when one has a heart, you know.”
His eyes drifted over the heart in France's hands. Instinctively France drew back a step, holding the heart closer as though he could protect it. Russia giggled quietly at his reaction.
“Don't worry, France! I can't do a thing to that heart. If I could destroy it myself, I would have centuries ago. I've tried to, but I simply can't. I've tried to take it out and leave it behind before too, but that doesn't work either. Someone has to take it from me. Funny how these things work, da?”
He stood up, stretched and grinned at France. His eyes were still wet and red rimed, but any emotion had left them entirely.
“I'm afraid I must leave now, France. I've wasted too much time, and I have an important job to do tonight!”
“Could you satisfy my curiosity about the nature of the job, chei?” France asked before he could stop himself. He didn't want to know, but at the same time he did, desperately.
Russia giggled again. “I'm sure you can guess! You did something like this back during your own revolution. Except you used a guillotine, and I'll use a gun.” His mouth suddenly curled into a sneer as he looked back at his own heart. “That silly thing makes it all so much more difficult. It makes me think I need those people. Silly, silly. Why should those children be worth anything to me? They aren't, you know. My heart confuses me and makes me think they're important. But now I know they aren't. They're just part of a royal family I don't need anymore. I will be better when they're all dead.”
The heart seemed to shudder in France's hands while Russia talked, and he held it tighter instinctively. The larger country's voice was quite calm and he was still smiling but...but he must not have dried his eyes completely, because another tear fell from his eye and snaked down his face as he spoke. He stopped speaking as it fell and touched his damp cheek in confusion, staring at his damp fingers for a moment. The smile vanished for a brief second, and then it was back again.
“Ah, I missed one~” he sang childishly as he rubbed that last tear away. “So clumsy of me. I won't be clumsy anymore tonight. I'll take my leave now, France. Good night!”
France stared at the closed door long after Russia had gone, absently rubbing his thumb over the heart in his hands.
“Don't worry,” he said to the heart, swallowing down a hysterical laugh he could feel building in his chest. “Don't worry, I will look after you. And I'll give you back to Russia one day, whether he wants you or not.”

Guh. Russiaaaa. So creepy and yet so woobietastic at the same time. What makes all this even more chilling is how well it would fit in between the Bloody Sunday and modern-day strips. (And what would happen if France cannot force Russia to take back his heart...?)

A previous commenter pretty much summed up my feelings. "Creepy and woobietastic" is exactly what it is, and this bridges the conflicting sides of Russia we've seen quite well.

Anon, every word of this is perfect. My heart is broken. Still, I want to thank you for writing this. It needed to be written, I think.
