"This is why you don’t get involved with them, you know."
"I know."
"Especially the young ones. Their hearts are fickle."
"I know."
"...Perhaps this will teach you a lesson. You do need to grow up a little."
"...I know."
England couldn't continue that mostly one-sided conversation anymore. America, loud obnoxious "I’m the hero!" America, was being uncharacteristically quiet. A bouquet of roses lay abandoned at his feet, his hands folded in his lap, his gaze locked straight ahead on nothing. It was a look that could be mistaken for boredom, but England knew better. America's boredom was nothing like this.
"...You’ll get sick if you stay out here too long, git."
"I know."
England sighed in frustration and turned to walk away, pausing momentarily to glance one last time at the young nation. He hadn't moved an inch. Falling in love with a normal human could only lead to disaster. They all knew that, but perhaps America with his endless optimism thought he’d be different, that his experience would be different. But America was also resilient, he'd likely bounce back even by the next day, so England didn't feel too guilty leaving him there.
He didn't catch the lonely sigh from America as he walked away.
