As they arrived at the ballroom Alfred scanned the crowd. Most of the nations were still arriving. He spotted Francis and Antonio though and gave them a friendly wave. The two older nations responded by giving him a thumbs up. Arthur checked his coat, and Alfred went to pick out a table. He chose a table by the window. Arthur soon joined him.
“Shall I get you some wine?” Alfred offered “Yes, please,” Arthur answered “Would you prefer red or white?” Alfred wondered “Red if you can,” Arthur answered He gazed after Alfred as the American left for the bar, trying to figure out exactly what was behind his unusual behavior tonight. Alfred soon returned with two glasses of red wine. “Attention, Attention. Thank you all for coming. My friends, as nations we work hard and strive together for a better world. Tonight, though we come together to celebrate the strides we have made so far, and enjoy a well earned rest. So without further ado, dinner is served,” Francis announced from the stage The announcement was met with polite claps all around and a couple of cheers from Feliciano. The waiters took their cue and began passing out plates of Chicken Caprese and Beef Bourguignon. “So have you been sailing lately?” Alfred wondered nervously “I’ve been rather busy lately,” Arthur answered “Oh I just thought maybe over the summer we could go for a little jaunt on my yacht,” Alfred continued “You don’t have a yacht,” Arthur noted glancing at Alfred suspiciously “Right, what I meant was uh…” “Are you sure, you’re feeling well?” Arthur wondered “I feel fine. What about the 2012 Olympics have you begun preparing yet?” Alfred asked “Naturally we have some of our best working on it as we speak. It is an important opportunity for the United Kingdom after all,” Arthur answered Alfred nodded as Arthur began to explain about building contracts and security protocols. After a rambling conversation that somehow ended with a discussion of New England weather, both nations had run out of things to say and were sipping their wine silently. Then the band began to play a gentle melody. “Would you like to dance?” Alfred asked “Excuse me?” Arthur asked, taken aback “You’re excused. Should I assume that means you don’t wish to dance?” Alfred smiled “I suppose a dance might be nice,” Arthur concluded He offered his hand. Alfred took it and led Arthur to the dance floor. They took up the opening positions and accidently stepped into each other. “I think I’ll lead,” Alfred stated with a bemused smile They took up positions again and this time fell into a proper waltz. “When did you learn to dance?” England wondered incredulously “About two weeks ago,” America answered mysteriously Behind Arthur’s back Roderich gave the American a wink as he waltzed passed with Elizaveta. Then the music began to swell. Alfred smiled and spun Arthur out. Arthur twirled back into Alfred. For a couple of moments both nations were simply carried along on strains of music as they whirled and twirled all around the dance floor. Finally Arthur caught as breath as the song faded and Alfred dipped him. Both of them bowed as the other nations clapped. Arthur simply grinned. On their way back to the table Alfred bumped into Matthew and whispered something in his ear. Matthew blushed, and then approached Francis who bowed. The next thing the Canadian knew, the Frenchmen was leading him onto the dance floor. Alfred smiled to himself. The waiters served a desert of dark chocolate cake. Francis was called back to the stage and everyone applauded him for hosting and organizing the event. It was at this point England began yawning and many of the countries began filing out. “Shall we call it a night?” Alfred asked “Yes, it might be a good idea,” Arthur answered So they thanked Francis, retrieved their coats and left for their hotel. “Don’t keep my brother out too late,” Alfred joked “I make no guarantees,” Francis replied Matthew simply blushed.

The two nations walked back in silence admiring the lights and sounds of Paris. Halfway through Alfred noticed Arthur was shivering. Wordlessly he took off his outer jacket and placed it around Arthur’s shoulders. “Why are you behaving so differently tonight?” Arthur asked “I’m afraid I don’t quite understand your meaning,” Alfred replied “Well first of all. Since when did you start talking in that manner? You’re acting much more considerate and refined and…” “Gentlemanly?” Alfred added with a slightly smug smile “Yes,” Arthur consented Alfred took Arthur’s hand. “I know I can be loud and obnoxious sometimes, and I’m sorry. I just wanted to be the type of person you’d be proud to take to fancy events. “Alfred, I am proud to take you to these events. Although I do appreciate the effort,” Arthur noted “You do?” “I do,” Arthur answered He leaned in and gave his former colony a kiss. Alfred grinned and placed his arm around Arthur. Soon they reached the hotel. “Well, goodnight,” Alfred stated as they arrived at Arthur’s door. “Hmm, aren’t you coming in for the night?” Arthur asked, a hungry gleam in his eyes. “Arthur, that just wouldn’t be gentlemanly of me,” Alfred answered He then bent down and pressed a kiss to the back of Arthur’s hand. “But this is…But I’m...But we’re…” the Englishman tried to argue Alfred simply turned and left, chuckling to himself. He’d make it up to Arthur at a later date.
The End
Sorry, if this wasn’t quite what you had in mind. I kind of rushed through it. I apologize, since I’m not particularly good at this. The nations all getting together to help Alfred become a gentleman just seemed cute to me. I tried to throw in humor with Alfred flubbing the conversation a little. I’m sorry if Alfred wasn’t as gentlemanly as you hoped, but I tried. Anyways thanks for reading. Sorry I couldn’t throw in smut.
