Note: First-time filler wants to apologize; English isn’t my first language, so there will be spelling and grammar mistakes. Truly sorry, I have tried to spot them the best I can! Furthermore, it’s a long fill.. So sorry. First time in here, and I already fail, oh God! Well, I’ll stop rambling now and just get to the fill. I hope someone out there will enjoy it.
P.s.: It will be explained later, but for a start: Arthur is the nowaday England, Kirkland is the pirate-England
Prologue
“Any last words?”
Kirkland blinked with the eyes a couple of times as if he hadn’t understood the question, and the man cleared his throat before repeating: “Any last words before the executing?”
The crowd turned quiet. All eyes were fastened at Kirkland who seemed to be the only one completely unaffected by the whole deal about him being put to death in a minute. As a matter of fact he was smiling, and a second later he threw his head backwards as he let go of a loud laughter. The lady at Arthur’s side wrinkled her brows.
“What is the matter with him?” Arthur heard her whisper to her husband, “is he going crazy?”
“No, he always was,” the man answered, and they snickered as if having shared the best joke in centuries. Arthur shook his head and covered his eyes with a low whimper.
“This just ain’t happening,” he whispered to himself and took in a deep breath, “it’s just too much, it’s just too much.”
Kirkland’s laughter had died out, but he was still smiling at the waiting crowd. He let go of a sigh and raised the brows as if he felt sorry for them. “Isn’t it ironic?” he finally asked, stiffling a little in the seat as much as the robes let him, “here, my whole life, I’ve plead the state of this country to listen to me, and all my life they’ve refused to recognize me as a human being. Why? Because I am a pirate. But now! Now I am to die, now you’ll all listen, now you beg of me to speak, you expect me to speak! Isn’t it ironic? Why aren’t you all laughing? Don’t you appreciate irony?”
No one dared to say a word. Kirkland’s smile widened. “Why all these serious faces? Shouldn’t you feel joy? You’ve got me. You’ve got the man who’ve made the oceans unsafe for decent people. You’ve got your rapist, your fighter, your thief. Do smile. It may be my last day alive, but for you it’s your last day in fear.” Kirkland turned his gaze to the sunny sky.
“You know..” he mumbled, held a short pause, “as I was born, I always dreamt of more. I hoped for a better world than what is, and I tried to create one. But look at what I created.” Kirkland’s smile fell. He narrowed his gaze. “I do regret. It would be a lie to say I don’t. I regret having taken all those innocent lifes. I regret having turned my blind eye to the crews violent raping of your young daughters and sons. I regret…” His voice broke. A quiet whisper started in the crowd, but it stopped at once as Kirkland’s gaze slipped over them and rested at Arthur. Kirkland’s lips slowly curved into a sad smile.
“One thing I do not regret, however,” he said with a soft voice, “I’m just sad that it’s one of my many dreams I won’t get to dream to an end.”
At that point Arthur broke down. He fell to his knees and screamed. The people around him stepped aside, and Kirkland turned to the man behind him and nodded:
