Ever since she had known him, Antonia had never taken Lovino all that seriously. Maybe that was the root of their problems with each other, she mused; Lovino’s dishonest nature and her oblivious one rendered them unable to take each other seriously.
He was just so young; it was something she was reminded of over and over again. His body had looked like a fifteen-year old boy when he had gathered all his courage and kissed her. It’d been his first kiss, and she hadn’t taken him seriously because - because it was adorable, seeing his face bright red like tomato, and the kiss had been so short and clumsy, almost only a peck.
She had laughed then and hugged him, suffocating him with her breasts, and called him cute. He had been embarrassed and angry and she still remembered the feeling of him pushing her away and running off screaming about how much he hated her.
It hadn’t stopped him from trying though. It was too bad that she became aware of his feelings so late; she had taken his clumsy (and often offensive-sounding) attempts at flirting the wrong way. She hadn’t taken him seriously until he had kissed her roughly and confessed (“I-I like you, damn it!”). That had been when his body had grown up, after North and South had been united.
They’d had sex. Appearance-wise, she had been 25 and he 22. She’d been a little disappointed that she hadn’t been his first, a little mad at herself for not having noticed his feelings before. But it had been good - of course it had.
Oh, if she’d known just how serious things would become, she would definitely have held back.
Francis had been the first to notice, of course, even before she did so herself. They’d been chatting after a meeting while Lovino was busy yelling at Ludwig because of some trivial thing and Francis’ grin just kept getting bigger.
“Your breasts look fantastic today, chérie.”
She blinked, looking down at her assets. They’d been a little tender and swollen as of late. “Really? That’s strange, they actually hurt a bit lately. They’re sore when Lovino -“
“Mon dieu,” Francis raised an eyebrow. “Lovino? Really? Isn’t he a little young?”
“You’ve had younger ones, you know…”
He waved her off. “I didn’t mean that, chérie. I meant - isn’t he a little young to be a father?”
She had laughed and called Francis an idiot. She couldn’t be pregnant, right? Nations didn’t get pregnant - or at least none of the female nations had gotten pregnant before. If one of them got pregant, it would mean a new country is born, right? And nowadays, countries aren’t just born everywhere.
She tried to shake it off; she distracted herself. Going on dates with Lovino (who was was still adorably embarrassed and torn between being mean to her and treating her like a lady), hanging out with Gilbert, visiting Argentina and the others…
And yet, she couldn’t quite forget Francis’ words; it didn’t exactly help that the other nation smirked at her whenever they met, staring pointedly at her stomach and teasing her. After two weeks, she was so unsettled that she actually bought a pregnancy test.
The little pink plus mocked her endlessly. Moreso than Francis.
