Thus the Devil stared upon Gilbert in shock.
And Gilbert spake saying: “Yes, I’m just that awesome.”
And the Devil did disappear for the presence of Gilbert’s awesomeness caused him much shame and woe.

Berlin 1933
“You will sign this pact knowing the price to be paid in the future?” The cloaked figure with the scratchy voice asked the man standing before him at the crossroad outside of Berlin.
Gilbert nodded. “Yes, with Hitler outlawing all other parties but his Nazi party1 I know nothing good will come of this. I will do anything to protect West.”
“Very well, then when the time comes that he no longer needs you, you will be mind.” The figure said, reaching out a bony hand to Gilbert and touching the back of his hand. A mark appeared there, the mark of the Devil, before the figure cackled and disappeared.
Left alone now Gilbert looked towards the Heavens. “I once believed in you unconditionally, I still do, but I have to cover all angles if I want West safe. I hope you understand that. . .”
He wasn’t sure if it was in answer to his words, or not, but the sky suddenly let out a clap of thunder and the rain began to thunder down on him. He couldn’t help but smile bitterly as he continued to stare into the Heavens; the only though on his mine was his brother.
Berlin 1947
This was it then . . . the Marshall Plan2, this was what would help West rebuild and grow after the war. Sure he still had reparations to pay, but this way his people wouldn’t suffer and he wouldn’t die.
As he watched West talk things over with the other countries he couldn’t help but smile as he felt his hand begin to burn. “It’s that time already huh?” He asked to no one in particular. Sighing he smiled sadly and looked back to where West was. “Just let me say good bye.”

“Hey West.” Gilbert said after the meeting, smiling down at his brother as the man finished his meeting.
“Bruder, what is it?” Ludwig asked him, seeming to know that something was wrong almost immediately.
Gilbert couldn’t help but smile a little wider at that, though it was a sad little smile. “I’ve come to say goodbye.”
Ludwig frowned at that. “Goodbye? Where are you going?”
“I don’t know yet, but it’s probably going to be far away.” Gilbert said as he enveloped his brother in a hug. “You’re safe now so I have to go, you don’t need me anymore.” He released his brother then and before the other could say anything he ran off. He didn’t want the other to see the tears that were gathering in his eyes.

An hour later he was at the same crossroad that he had made his deal with the devil fourteen years before, it felt like a lifetime now. He noticed immediately that the same figure from that night was standing there waiting for him.
“It is time.” It said as he came up to it.
“I’m ready. . .” Gilbert said, closing his eyes and waiting for the pain that was sure to come. But it didn’t, instead he heard someone shout his name and then strong arms wrapped around him.
“Bruder. . .”
“W-West?” Gilbert said in surprise, opening his eyes and looking down at the arms wrapped around him. “What are you doing here?” He noticed the Devil was still there but he seemed to be waiting.
West let out a shuddery laugh. “I knew what you did all those years ago. . .what you did to keep me safe. And I made my own agreement.”
Gilbert felt his face go pale. “No. . .”
“Yes.” The Devil said. “Your wish was granted, and your brothers will soon come to pass. You will be separated and you will both go through much grief. Your brother will be spared much pain as per our original bargain, but you will experience untold agonies in during these years.” He told Gilbert as he began to fade before disappearing with a clap of thunder, his voice echoing one last time. “With this both your bargains will be met.”
The two brothers were left alone then, a silence stretching out between them until Gilbert finally spoke. “Why?”
“Because you are my brother and I could not bare to lose you.” Ludwig whispered his usual iron composure not at all present.
“Thank you.”
November 1989
A wall fell and two brothers were reunited after twenty-eight years. 3

This is bittersweet... ;A; Not in a really angsty way but in a way that tugs at your heart-strings. Of both brothers who made the pact to protect the other.
