“Was Mother sick, papa?”
“Shh, just listen!”
She was sick. He didn’t realize it until later, much later, but Okalani was dying. Hawaii was changing, her islands were going from republic to territory and were well on their way to becoming a state, and when that happened they wouldn’t need her anymore.
But he didn’t know that. He just thought she was tired, and as he tapped her on the shoulder, he never even thought to ask what was wrong.
“Aloha, Alfred.”
“Aloha yourself, Oka. How are things on the island of paradise?”
She laughed lightly and took his hand. He didn’t realize he was blushing.
“Tourism is up, your military is going to put in more bases, the people’s elected government is working smoothly…Really, I don’t think that anything is wrong. England and his prince visited recently! They seemed to like it here.”
He frowned at the mention of England, though he was glad she didn’t use his proper name. Maybe she didn’t know it, but he didn’t care. It made him special.
“Sooo….did you like him….?Arthur, I mean, not the prince.”
“He was all right. Polite, boring. He’s not you.”
Alfred beamed and Okalani laughed. She grabbed his hand and started to lead him away, making him beam brighter.
“Come, let me show you where we’re putting the Museum of Art.”
