I'm not one for organizing social activities (I'll admit that I'd rather latch onto other people's plans), but I made an effort yesterday. Ivan, a friend from work, had mentioned that he and his girlfriend wanted to play beach volleyball, did I know of any beaches? Oh, did I? I mentioned that I play and a lot of my friends do too, if he was interested in some more people to play.
Long story short, we tried to coordinate some volleyballage yesterday, but it didn't quite work out. No worries because I hung out at North Ave beach with my biography of Arthur Rimbaud until the sun emerged and my friends showed up, one by one. Even though we didn't play volleyball, about ten of us crashed on a patch of sand and hung out for several hours. Even though I'd put on sunscreen, my bike ride from Lincoln Square down the lakefront to NAB must've caused it to sweat off because I ended up getting burned on my back. I've never really burned before, but I have some very unfortunate burn/tan lines on my back side. While my (female) friends were appropriately attired in bikinis, I wore clothes appropriate for biking/volleyball--a racerback yoga tank and (short) shorts.
As you can imagine, I have a racerback burn, a burn on my back where the tank ended but before the shorts began, and also a burn on the backs of my legs starting from my upper thighs.
Despite the burnage (which looks unfortunate but isn't all that painful), the holiday turned out to be a great time. The clouds blew westward and the sky cleared up, it was warm and breezy on the beach and I got to meet some cool new people. The ride on the lakefront was wonderful. I had no idea the trails were so fantastic--it opens up a great new way to get downtown while avoiding street traffic.
The evening came to a close with a barbecue over at Carla Maria and Rachel's apartment a few blocks from my place. They have a northward facing balcony where we cooked and ate and hung out and watched some fireworks. I finally met the guy that CM has been trying to set me up with for at least the past 6 months or so.
All in all, it was a great day.
I went for another ride out to the lakefront this morning and stretched out in a bikini in the hopes of evening out my "color." I'm not sure it worked--laying in the sun and reading a book can only sustain my interest for so long. It certainly was a relaxing way to start my day!
