Why This Must Be Read: My last rec for this post is a story that, as a PoC, resonated really deeply with me. We know that racism is a reality in our world and that comics, despite their fantastical elements, are a reflection of our culture. The author (who is PoC) doesn't shy away from exploring how Eli has to negotiate being a superhero and fighting for a society that disenfranchises and marginalizes people who look like him. What would it take to make Eli give up his mantle as Patriot? How does racism and privilege impact his relationships with the rest of the Young Avengers (who are white) and especially Kate (who is both white and extremely wealthy)? These are heavy themes and complex themes, but the author writes about them with honesty and care. Highly recommended.
