More than just a word used by Spock in countless Trek movies and episodes. Sometimes you really encounter some things for which the only words are ones like 'fascinating', or 'amazing', or even 'awesome'.
I've been reading 'the brain that changes itself', and yes, its fascinating. And somewhat horrifying, for several reasons....
- One reason is that those of you who don't like reading about the role animals have had to play in the advancement of science should be warned that the some of the advancements covered by the book include experiments and research in which animals play a significant part.
- Another is that it seems that the spirit of those who persecuted people like Galileo is still alive and well, and standing in the way of many who discover things that don't fit nicely into what the scientific community like to think of as 'established and proven fact'.
But that aside, I can recommend the book be at least looked at to see some of the discoveries that have been made about the brain, what it is capable of, and how many ways in which it can in fact recover from horrendous injuries, some sustained years or decades ago. Truly amazing. And I'm only about halfway through.
Other than that, waiting for a few more weeks to pass and hoping that my hayfever will settle down. The antihistamines keep it under control, about 95%, and I'm not interested in taking anything stronger if I can avoid it.
Work is as stupid as ever. But some bits are interesting and engaging, which is always good.
And recent resumption of roleplaying with the OTE group has been good. Looking to try some old fashioned RQ2 inspired gaming using the new RQ rules from Mongoose Publishing - the ones you can download. Forgot though how much work such games can be in prepping scenarios/characters...
